Six Vestal seniors named National Merit Scholarship finalists

The Vestal Central School District applauds the news that six Vestal Senior High School seniors have advanced to finalist standing in the competition for National Merit Scholarship awards.
The six students whose named are listed below went from semifinalists to finalists after having fulfilled several requirements. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record, be recommended by the school principal, earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performances, and submit a detailed scholarship application which includes an essay and information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) program is in the progress of selecting National Merit Scholarship winners from the group of 15,000 finalists. In March, the NMSC will begin offering scholarship offers to winners and notifying the students’ high school principals. Some 8,200 awards totalling $33 million will be awarded this spring.
