IMDb Movie of the Day For over forty years, Henry Darger lived on the third floor of a house in Chicago. A hermit and forager, Darger had no friends despite holding the same job, that of a hospital janitor, for most of his 81 years. It wasn't until the last stage of his life, after Darger was moved to a Catholic poor house, that his landlord, Kiyoko Lerner, discovered his life's work, a room full of paper dolls, large-scale drawings, Virgin Mary statues ... and what's considered to be the longest novel ever written. At 15,000 single-spaced pages, Darger's In the Realms of the Unreal is a story of the Vivian girls' war against the Glandelinian army; it's a beautiful, exploitative, and at times upsetting piece that Darger worked on alongside his 5,000 page autobiography. Oscar-winning filmmaker Jessica Yu was introduced to Lerner after she first saw Darger's work at an "outsider art" exhibition in Los Angeles. Lerner invited Yu into Darger's room, now a museum of sorts, while making her documentary, which she named after Darger's signature work. A team of animators helps Yu brings Darger's story to life as she tries to piece together his biography which, due to lack of details and motivations, is as compelling as How to Draw a Bunny, a documentary on the death of artist Ray Johnson. This truly is one of the most beautiful modern non-narrative films, highly recommended for the mysteries it illustrates. - Arno Kazarian
