Hon. Jean-Jacques
Blais
Chairman
Hon. Jean-Jacques Blais is Chairman of the University
of Ottawa Heart Institute Board of Directors, succeeding Mr. Gordon Ritchie.
Mr. Blais is also Chairman of the French Language Services Committee at
the Heart Institute. Mr. Blais is a lawyer, a former Member of Parliament,
and counsel to Marusyk Miller & Swain LLP. In 2003 he spent eight months
in Kabul, Afghanistan as Head of Mission for Elections Canada advising
the United Nations on elections. In October he spent three weeks in Iraq,
as Head of Mission for the International Foundation for Election Systems.
Mr. Blais obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the
University of Ottawa in 1961, and his LLB in 1964. He was called to the
bar in 1966. First elected to the House of Commons in October 1972, Mr.
Blais was re-elected in 1974, 1979, and 1980. He was appointed Parliamentary
Secretary to the President of the Privy Council in 1975 by (then) Prime
Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. Mr. Blais further served in the Ministerial
position of Postmaster General from 1976 to 1978 and in February of 1978
was appointed the Solicitor General for Canada. In January 1980, Mr. Blais
was appointed the Minister of Supply and Services and Receiver General
for Canada with responsibility for Defense Production and Statistics Canada.
In August of 1983, he was made Minister of National Defense. In 2001, Mr.
Blais obtained a Masters degree in International Law from the University
of Ottawa.
Mr. Blais is a director of the Canadian Institute of Strategic
Studies, Chairman Emeritus of the Pearson Peacekeeping Training Center,
and a founding Director of the Canada-Israel Industrial Research Foundation.
He advises clients on government relations, public administration, and
governance. Mr. Blais is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada and
the Liberal Party of Canada.
Dr.
Denise Alcock RN, PhD
University of Ottawa
Dr.
Alcock is a member of the board of the Ontario Health Research Alliance.
Her research and publications are in the health systems, health services
domain. She was the Founding Director of the Child Life Department
as well as of the Nursing Staff Development and Research Department
during her 15 years at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.
Dr. Alcock has served on a number of international, national, provincial,
and regional boards and committees. Some of the boards and committees
are Medical Research Council, the Governing Council of the Canadian
Institutes of Health Research, President of the Canadian Association
of Schools of Nursing, Board member of Sisters of Charity of Ottawa
Health Services and the Ottawa Hospital.
Dr.
Donald S. Beanlands FRCP, FACC, FACP
Deputy Director General
Professor Emeritus, University of Ottawa
Dr.
Donald Beanlands graduated from Dalhousie University as a gold medalist
and completed his postgraduate medical training at Dalhousie University
and the University of Toronto. Dr. Beanlands was appointed to the
Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1962 and became
Chief of Cardiology at the Toronto Western Hospital. In 1977, he initiated
the development of the Cardiology Division at the University of Ottawa
Heart Institute. He was Chief of the Division of Cardiology for 19
years and Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Beanlands
has been instrumental in the development of the Cardiology Division
and teaching programs at the Heart Institute.
Dr. Chris Carruthers
Chief of Staff

Dr.
Carruthers is the founding President of the Canadian Society of Physician
Executives. He graduated from Carleton University with a BSc and his
MD from the University of Ottawa Medical School, and an EMBA from
Concordia University. In 1998 he became the first Chief of Staff of
the Ottawa Hospital and has held the positions of Vice President of
Medical Affairs and President of the Medical Staff. He continues to
practice orthopedics concentrating on hip and knee joint surgery.
Mr. Bill Colby

Mr. Colby is a First Vice President of CIBC Wood Gundy
and high net worth investment advisor ranking in the top twenty of
the firm's fourteen hundred investment advisors. He also operates the Colby
Group in
partnership with his two sons, providing investment services through
CIBC Wood Gundy. Mr. Colby has had a long, distinguished and successful
career
in investment and finance with firms such as Midland Walwyn Capital
Inc., Merrill Lynch Canada and the Bank of Nova Scotia. He is deeply committed
to the Ottawa community and works with a variety of organizations
including
the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation where he has served
as its Chairman of the Board.
Mr. John (Ian) A. Craig
Retired - Nortel Networks
Mr.
Ian Craig retired from Nortel Networks in 2000 as Executive Vice-President
and Chief Marketing Officer. In his 33 years at Nortel and its research
subsidiary, he held many senior management positions including President
of Wireless and Carrier Solutions, President of Broadband Networks,
Chief Executive of Nortel Europe, and Executive Vice-President of
Enterprise Marketing, Nortel USA. Mr. Craig has a BSc in Electrical
Engineering from Imperial College, University of London and is the
Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. He sits on the Boards
of CAE, Bell Canada International and ARRIS, a provider of CATU equipment,
Atlanta.
Dr. Ross Davies

& Scientific Staff
Dr. Davies received
his Honours Degree in Science (Genetics) from McGill University in 1970 and his Medical Degree
from the University of Toronto in 1974. He trained in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at the
Toronto General Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.
Dr. Davies joined the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in
1980 and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
He initiated the Nuclear Cardiology program at the Heart Institute and was Director until 1998.
Dr. Davies was also involved in initiating the Heart Transplant program in 1984 and served as
its Medical Director until 2003. He has served as President of the Medical and Scientific
Staff at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute since 2001.
Dr. David J. R. Evans

Dr.
Evans received his PhD in Analytical Chemistry at McMaster University.
Both his MSc in Inorganic Chemistry and his BSc in Chemistry were obtained
at the University of Auckland. Dr. Evans is Senior Vice President, Business
Development and Strategic Growth, at MDS Nordion in Kanata, Ontario, responsible
for developing and managing major new business for the company. Dr. Evans
has also worked on the identification, analysis, and implementation of
opportunities to expand MDS Nordion's business in the pharmaceutical and
microbial control areas. He was actively involved in the new MDS Pharmaceutical
Services Division, a grouping of companies headquartered in Princeton,
New Jersey, that provides contract development services to the pharmaceutical
and biotechnology industries. He has been with MDS Nordion and its predecessor
companies, AECL Radiochemical Co. and AECL Commercial Products, since 1969,
and his previous positions include Vice President, Operations; Vice President
and Development Manager, Isotope Division. Dr. Evans is also a board member
of the OLSC and Resolution Pharmaceuticals Inc., a start-up pharmaceutical
development company located in Toronto, Ontario.
Mr. Marc Jolicoeur

Mr.
Jolicoeur is a Partner in the Ottawa Office of Borden Ladner Gervais.
He graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Business
Administration and a Bachelor of Law. Mr. Jolicoeur was called to
the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1980. He is fluently bilingual
and is the Leader of the Business Law Group. His teaching involvement
includes senior instructor at the Ottawa Program of the Bar Admission
Course of the Law Society of Upper Canada for over 10 years. Past
and present business involvements include the boards of several private
corporations, business and trade associations, and the Steering Committee
of The Ottawa Partnership.
Dr. Jack Kitts

Dr. Kitts
is the President and Chief Executive Office of The Ottawa Hospital since his
appointment in 2002. He is also Vice-President of Medical Affairs. He graduated
from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa in 1980 and completed his
internship at the University of Toronto in 1981. He joined the Department of
Anesthesiology at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in 1988 where he was appointed Chief of
the Department until the creation of the Ottawa Hospital in 1998. Dr. Kitts was
named Associate Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Ottawa. He obtained a
Masters in Business Administration from the University of Ottawa in 2001.
Ms. Coralie Lalonde

Ms. Lalonde is the founder and CEO of Katsura Investments,
an early stage private equity investment group established in 1998. Prior to Katsura, she was the founder and CEO of Integra Solutions,
a high tech services firm established in 1993. Ms. Lalonde is an active member of the business and non-profit community, serving on many
private company and non-profit boards, such as Maskery and DNA Genotek. She is a member of the Board of the Community Foundation of Ottawa
and chairs the boards of Volunteer Ottawa and the Tech Venture Challenge. She is also co-chair and co-founder of ENGAGE! She volunteers her
time for many organizations, including Junior Achievement and Trinity of Hope among others.
Mr. Herb Metcalfe

Mr. Metcalfe co-founded The Capital Hill Group in 1985 and since
then has attracted a wide variety of national and international organizations to help resolve complex, ongoing issues. He has over 30 years' experience in federal government and government relations. He has served as Senior Policy Advisor and Executive Assistant to the federal
Ministers of Finance, Environment, Small Business and Science and Technology. He is also the former President of the Canadian Association
of Young Political Leaders. His involvement in community affairs is considerable, and includes charitable work for the Children's Hospital
of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and coaching the Golden Knights hockey team.
Dr. Gilles G. Patry

In
August 2001, Dr. Gilles G. Patry became the University of Ottawa's
4th Rector since a reorganization in 1965 that allowed it to join
the ranks of Ontario's provincially-assisted universities. Not only
is he the first locally born and educated CEO of the 153-year-old
Institution, he is also the first to have extensive private-sector
experience. He earned both his BASc and MASc degrees at the University
of Ottawa in 1971 and 1973. Rector Patry is Associate editor of the
Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering. He specializes in
the field of modeling, simulation, and control of environmental systems(in
general) and of wastewater treatment plants (in particular).

Robert Roberts MD, FRCPC, FACC

Dr.
Roberts received his MD from Dalhousie University and completed his
residency in Internal Medicine and Fellowship in Cardiology at the
University of Toronto. Funded by a Canadian Heart Foundation Scholarship,
he pursued research in enzymology and cardiac metabolism at the University
of California, San Diego, following which he was Director of the Cardiac
Care Unit at Barnes Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine,
Washington University. In 1982, he assumed the position as Chief of
Cardiology at Baylor. Dr. Roberts was appointed as President, Chief
Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of the University of
Ottawa Heart Institute on April 1st, 2004.

David
Scott is Co-Chairperson of the National Firm and Partner in the Ottawa
Office of Borden Ladner Gervais. He received a Bachelor of Arts from
Loyola College (University Of Montreal) as well as a Bachelor of Laws
from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Bar of the Province
of Ontario in 1962 and is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada
as a Specialist in Civil Litigation. He was appointed Queen's Counsel
in 1976. In 2001, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from both
the Law Society of Upper Canada and the University of Ottawa. David is
a member of the Ottawa General Litigation Professional Group. He is highly
active in the community and has served as a Director for numerous social
and philanthropic organizations.

Krishan (Kris) Singhal

Mr. Singhal is Founder, President and CEO of the Richcraft
Group of Companies, established in 1983. Richcraft is the largest landowner
and second largest builder in the Ottawa Region, with a workforce exceeding
130 employees and over 1000 staff through subcontractors. Prior to this,
Mr. Singhal worked extensively with the Federal Government and with Northern
Telecom in various management roles. Mr. Singhal is a Canadian Certified
Management Accountant (CMA), holds a degree in Financial Management (FM)
and completed a B. Comm. Honours and Law degree in India. He is very active
in community initiatives in both Canada and India.
Mr. Lawrence Soloway

Mr.
Soloway is a partner in the law firm of Soloway Wright LLP in Ottawa.
He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts
and from Queen's University Law School with an LLB in 1974. He was
called to the Bar in 1976 and has practiced in the fields of business
law, real estate, and insolvency. He has taught at the Bar Admission
Course of the Law Society of Upper Canada and at continuing legal
education programs. He has served as Chair of the Ottawa United Jewish
Appeal and as an officer of the Ottawa Jewish Community Council. He
was Chair of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Endowment Campaign
from 2000 to 2004 and is designated to be the Chair of the University
of Heart Institute Foundation commencing in September 2005. He was
awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for significant voluntary
contribution in 2002.
Dr. Shirley L. Thomson
Chair, Canadian Cultural
Property Export Review Board
Dr.
Thomson received her PhD in art history from McGill University in
1981, her MA in art history from the University of Maryland in 1974
and her BA in history from the University of Western Ontario in 1952.
Her particular field of interest is 18th century French art and architecture.
In January 2003, Dr. Thomson was appointed Chair of the Canadian Cultural
Property Export Review Board, an administrative tribunal of the Department
of Canadian Heritage established in 1977 through the Cultural Property
Export and Import Act.
Dr. Thomson directed the Canada Council for the Arts between 1998-2002.
From 1987-1997, she served as Director of the National Gallery of
Canada, during which time she oversaw the Gallery's move into its
new home, an outstanding series of exhibitions and acquisitions, and
its change to Crown Corporation status. Between 1985-1987, Dr. Thomson
was Secretary-General of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, in which
position she also sat on the Senior Management Committee of the Canada
Council. From 1982-1985, she was Director of the McCord Museum in
Montréal, and in 1981 acted as special coordinator for the Largellière
exhibition at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts.

Mr. Tremblay is currently active in High Tech as a member
of Purple Angel, an investment group based in Ottawa. Mr. Tremblay is an
engineer with 25 years of professional experience which includes Senior
Vice President of Operations at JDS Uniphase (1998-2001) and Vice President
and Co-Founder at Fitel-Photomatrix (1988-1998). He was a member of the
Board of Directors for La Cité Collégiale community college
(1999-2002) and is currently Chair of the Board of Governors of The Ottawa
Hospital.

Mr.
Vered is a Professional Engineer educated at the University of Massachusetts.
He is a principal director and project manager of Arnon Corporation
and President of Ron Engineering and Construction (Eastern) Ltd.,
locally-based family-owned companies with international experience.
Through the Vered Foundation, the Vered family has been active in
and supportive of numerous local causes including the United Jewish
Appeal, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Loeb Health
Research Institute, and the Ottawa General Eye Institute.
Mr. Vered is a Member of the Board of Trustees, S.O.C. Health Service. At this institution he
serves on the Executive Committee, Quality Management and Mission Effectiveness Committee and
is Chair of the Building Committee.
Dr. Peter Walker

Dr.
Peter Walker is currently Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University
of Ottawa and the Chair of the Council of Ontario Faculties of Medicine.
He joined the University in 1985 where he received his MD in 1972.
He pursued his clinical training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology
at the University of Ottawa and at University of Laval. He developed
his research interests in developmental endocrinology while doing
his postdoctoral training at UCLA School of Medicine and University
of Laval. Fluently bilingual, Dr. Walker has taught in both French
and English. He has served as a Regional Director of the Medical Research
Council and recently served on the Expert Panel on Health Professional
Human Resources. Dr. Walker is also a member of the Executive Committee
of the International Coordinating Council for Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
Ms. Deborah Weinstein

Ms. Weinstein is co-founder and partner at LaBarge Weinstein, one of
Canada's premier business law firms headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. Prior to founding
LaBarge Weinstein, she was managing partner of the Ottawa office of Blake, Cassels &
Graydon, one of Canada's largest law firms, and also a partner there from 1991 until 1997.
Ms. Weinstein's focus is on securities, mergers and acquisitions, and business law. She is
a graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto, Ontario. Ms. Weinstein is a member of the
Board of Directors of a number of public and private companies. In addition, she is on the
Dean's Advisory Board of the School of Management at the University of Ottawa.
Mr. Hugh Winsor, C.M.
Writer and Broadcaster
Hugh Winsor is one of Canada's leading commentators on
public affairs and a senior member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery. He has also had a long-term involvement with organizations
researching foreign aid programs and promoting the interests of developing countries. In addition, he is an adjunct professor at the
School of Policy Studies at Queen's University in Kingston.
In September 2005, he was invested as a member of the Order of Canada.
He joined the Globe and Mail in 1969 as a member of the Editorial Board and during a three-and-a-half decade career there, he has written
about a wide range of foreign and domestic issues. He is best known for the column he wrote from September 1997 until June 2005 on national
politics entitled The Power Game. He continues to write for the paper as an emeritus member of the Globe's Ottawa Bureau.
Mr. Winsor also helped create The Journal on CBC Television. He is a graduate of Queen's University and has served on the boards of
CUSO, OXFAM and the North-South Institute.
Ms. Carole Workman
Past Vice-Rector Resources (Vice-President, Finance and Administration), University of Ottawa
Ms. Workman has been a member of the Board of Directors of Hydro Ottawa Holding Inc.
since its inception and has been an active member of the Governance Committee as well as the Chair of the Audit and Local Distribution
Company Committees. On November 19, 2004, she was reappointed as Chair of the Board committee overseeing the local distribution company.
A chartered accountant, Ms. Workman is very knowledgeable in the areas of financing, auditing, construction financing and corporate governance.
She has served on a number of Boards for public and private organizations.
