Border row
Line up before PM, Sonia tells CMs
DH News Service Mumbai:
Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked the chief ministers of Karnataka and Maharashtra to meet the prime minister and discuss the boundary dispute and the recent dissolution of the Belgaum municipal corporation.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi has asked the chief ministers of Karnataka and Maharashtra to meet the prime minister and discuss the boundary dispute and the recent dissolution of the Belgaum municipal corporation.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of an AIDS awareness programme in Thane on Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said that he met Ms Gandhi in Delhi on Wednesday and apprised her of the recent developments related to the boundary dispute.

“She (Sonia) asked me and my Karnataka counterpart Dharam Singh go together to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discuss the issue with him,” Mr Deshmukh said. He said he had spoken to Mr Dharam Singh on telephone regarding the meeting.

During his visit to Delhi, Mr Deshmukh was to meet the prime minister, according to information available in the official circles here, but the PMO had not confirmed his appointment with the prime minister.

Mr Deshmukh had earlier declared in Mumbai that he would meet the prime minister and inform him about the “injustice” meted out to the Marathi-speaking people in the boundary areas of Karnataka. He, however, returned empty handed from Delhi on Wednesday night with a directive from Ms Gandhi instead.

Marathi meet

Meanwhile, the 79th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan (Marathi literary gathering) to be held in Solapur in January is likely to pass a resolution condemning the Karnataka government for its controversial action of dissolving the Belgaum corporation.
