Maynard HILL honoured by Aviation Week & Space Technology / New World Record Claims for Parachuting, Aeroplanes and Free balloons

Maynard L. HILL honoured
On 15 August and 27 October 2003, the FAI-News reported on the World Record set by Maynard L. HILL and his crew as their Model Plane crossed the Atlantic Ocean; this outstanding performance has been honoured by Aviation Week & Space Technology.

At the beginning of February, the Aviation Week & Space Technology Magazine presented its 47th annual Aeropspace "Laurels" selections. Each year, the magazine's editors nominate individuals and teams who made significant contributions to the international field of aerospace during the previous year.

In the category "Aeronautics / Propulsion", Maynard L. HILL has been honoured for "designing and being the first to fly an 11-lb model aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean, re-creating the flight of Alcock & Brown. Hill displayed remarkable tenacity in achieving this goal, making such a small craft have both the range and reliability required while on a shoestring budget, and overcoming poor weather and other hazards. Hill's lifelong efforts in support of model aviation have inspired generations of people attracted to aerospace".

A Life after FAI ?
After retirement from the world of parachuting, a life dedicated to the "History of Humanity".

Mr Jacques André ISTEL, IPC President of Honour and Mayor of the City of Felicity (California), informed FAI about the ambitious project he is managing in California : "To engrave in granite highlights of the collective memory of humanity". Mr ISTEL reports that the first stage of this project, completed in 2002, described "man's quest for the sky" and French aviation history.

Fly - Like a Bird
New promotional material on the market

FAI has been informed about the production, at the end of 2003, of a new 35-minute video (DVD and VHS) showing the diversity of aviation in Switzerland. Primarily focused on Swiss aeronautical activities, this production shows how Air Sports can open doors to a professional career in aviation : each Air Sport is presented with short sequences, and statements are made by Bertrand Piccard (first non-stop round-the-world flight with a balloon), Claude Nicollier (Swiss astronaut and recipient of the Yuri Gagarin Gold Medal in 1993) and Hans-Georg Schmid (multiple World Record holder with his homebuilt aircraft).

As 4 languages are available on the DVD version (English, German, French and Italian), the video may very well be used in other countries to show the diversity of aviation, and to motivate young people to enter the world of aviation.
