On our honeymoon to Great Britain we chose this hotel for the London portion of our trip because of it's convenience. It is directly connected to the Victoria mainline railway station, with links to Gatwick Airport and the national rail system. We also loved the traditional British elegance is this fine 364 room hotel.

The hotel's ammenities include the popular Harvard Bar, The Grosvenor Lounge, and a good restaurant, Christopher's at Victoria, where we enjoyed the breakfast buffet on two mornings. It is also in easy walking distance to Bunkingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament, Hyde Park and many other points of interest.

The Regent Palace: Don't expect posh! (despite the name!)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • One night on the 9th floor - the room was clean but shabby - the window couldn't be opened because it was broken, we could hear everything going on in the next room 'cos the walls were so thin, the tv was unwatchable. But hey!! how convenient... we were next to the shower room and loo!.... how much fun was THAT at 3am, 4am 5am!! It seemed that the WHOLE of the 9th floor needed to go to the loo (squeaky door) every 10 bloody minutes throughout the night!!! Oh and breakfast is NOT included. DESPITE ALL THAT..... I would definitely stay there again!! It was SOOO nice being right in the middle of London.... no travelling back to anywhere late at night .... the staff were friendly and helpful and the rooms, despite needing major redecoration, were CLEAN!

Cheapest hotel in Central London - and they were FULL - It seems this place is really popular.

    St Margarets (again!): Bloomsbury
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Same as before - This is Central London - it's not cheap. (If you don't have private facilities (ie shower and loo) then the rooms are a bit cheaper). I stayed here for a couple of nights because it was convenient and close to where I needed to be. If I had been staying longer I would find somewhere cheaper! Loads of places around to eat out in the evening (Holborn area) and just a short walk from the West End.

Very comfortable. Lovely breakfast room and lounge.

The Montague on the Gardens: Intimate luxury boutique hotel

Having never stayed in London prior to this trip, I wanted a place that would be secure and safe to walk at night. I wanted a quieter area of London but close enough to the attractions I wanted to see. I chose this hotel because it caters to the female traveler who travels alone by providing extra locks as well as female maids and room service servers. This hotel is a "gem" and I will stay here again when I return to London in the future. The Montague on the Garden is an intimate boutique hotel rated Four-Star Deluxe by the RAC and AA. Five Crown Silver Award from the English Tourist Board. It Overlooks a secluded garden square including a private conservatory. Guests can walk to Covent Garden, the West End theatres as well the British Museum which is located across the street from the hotel. I had a superior double room which looked out over a lovely garden. The bed was very comfortable, the temperature gauge kept the room at a constant temperature, the towels in the bathroom were thick, and thirsty. Many amenities included an in room safe, web tv (this was a bit difficult to see as the resolution was poor and it was a bit pricey at 7.00 bps for one hour of use), mineral water, a blow dryer, an iron and a trouser press, and very nice bathrobes to use during your stay. Excellent room service as well.

There is a sitting room on the ground floor where one may entertain guests which I did on 3 separate occasions. There were no glares or stares from the staff as a matter of fact, Mustapha the concierge, stepped forward to snap a picture or two for us. It was just like entertaining in my home. The staff is most competent and polite, they go out of the way to assist in making your stay a memorable one. Another unique item that this hotel provided for the room which I have never seen before, was a full compliment of business implements such as scotch tape, a stapler, a pair of scissors, paper clips as well as plain envelopes, pens and pencils. This came in so handy when I had to wrap a gift or two! The Montague has a very lovely high tea for a reasonable price, which rivals many upscale places that offer a high tea in London, they also have the Blue Door Bistro restaurant where you can have dinner at the Chef's table in the kitchen! Now how cool is that?

Rental or Share Accommodation: Need to find a share room or flat to rent??
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • There are loads of people (like me!!) that move to London for a while to experience living and working overseas. There are so many places to look for share and rentat accommodation that it is a little overwhelming. Some of the best places I found are: * www.thegumtree.com - especially good for finding share accommodation. * www.net-lettings.co.uk - really good as it gives you a price guide for all the areas of London, and gives you links to Estate Agents in the area's that you choose. * www.loot.com - classified style (also a newspaper) that is great for finding flats to rent - many of the adverts are private rentals, meaning you can save on agents fees etc. * www.findaproperty.com - great for searching for rentals properties.

There are areas in London that attract travellers from particular countries - for example, Shepherds Bush and Earls Court are popular for Aussies and Kiwis; Southfields is popular for South Africans This is great if you want to move to an area filled with the people you just left back home......

Look into this site: Prefer the B&B Personal Touch?

  • Quiet, residential Hampstead - London

Some travellers enjoy the more intimate interaction of staying in a Bed and Breakfast establishment. While that may sometimes mean sharing a bathroom or 'obeying the rules of the house' according to the owner's wishes, it also gives the visitor an opportunity to live something like a native and in a residential neighborhood. A valuable site for finding B&B's in London - or throughout Britain for that matter - is the listing below. The selection in incomparable. But one listing that caught my eye simply because it seems so charming is the Ossian Guest House in North London.

My wife has a brother living in England, about 1 hour outside London in Farnham, Surrey. With limited space due to his growing family, we decided to stay in a B&B in Farnham, so we could have a couple of days with Steve, since commitments prevented him from joining the family in Cornwall for Christmas. We had stayed at a very nice B&B there during our February, 2004 trip but I wanted to try something different this time, and settled on the interesting (and relatively expensive) Little Twynax B&B. I was thinking that finding B&Bs operating over the Christmas season might be a little tricky, so I was glad to hear that they were prepared to put us up when I contacted them from Canada. As it turned out, we were the only customers the owners had over the holidays because they were looking for a little break themselves. We ended up spending 2 nights here at the start of our journey and a final one nine nights later, so we would be in position to get to Heathrow early in the morning to fly out. For our day-trip into London, Steve and his daughter picked us up here and we all then took the ~1 hour train ride into the city.

This 300-year old cottage is absolutely beautiful, both outside and within. It is set in a one acre lot with nicely landscaped gardens, woodlands and a horse paddock. Access to the site is through a large swinging gate in their parking area beside the horse paddock and front lawns. We were given the double room at the left end of the house (photo) with our bedroom and adjoining bath upstairs and our dining room and living room (with a Christmas tree) downstairs. We enjoyed great breakfasts here in the rustic atmosphere of the low-beamed ceilings! The extra photos show me beside our bedroom entrance door, which only came up to just above my shoulder (I only bumped my head once!) and also the downstairs breakfast area with it's typical low ceiling beams and old farm implements on the walls. For a double room, we paid 55 pounds sterling (US$100) per night including breakfast.

    St Margaret's Hotel: A Winter's weekend

  • Great hotel right in the middle of London. Friendly helpful staff. The room was clean and had TV and telephone. The breakfast was waitress service and very filling. £90 for a double room with private facilities.

The view from our window was of a lovely little square - a private residents garden - beautiful in the early morning winter sun.

Baden Powell House: It's a scout thing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • for 30 quid we got an 8 bunk dorm to ourselves...I guess we were just lucky. it was clean and the security was excellent. There was a shower and loo in the dorm, and towels were also provided.

You have to eat breakfast with boy scouts. At least you don't have to cook it yourself over a camp fire whilst singing "Ging Gang Goolie". This is central London after all... there are regulations about these things!

    Baden Powell House: Be prepared....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • ....to have a bunch of boy scouts in the dorm next door. Baden Powell House is a hostel run by the scout movement and anyone involved in the scout movement gets a discount! (I dont know if this is just the UK or worldwide). Anyway... we are not involved in the scouts so we didn't. It is a nice place to stay though... directly opposite the Natural History Museum.

The hostel was opened in 1961 - 20 years after BP's death, as a living memorial to the founder of the Scouting movement, built by funds raised by the scouts themselves. In the foyer is a small exhibition about his life and the Scout movement.
