2005 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards
On Friday 9 June 2006 the Minister for Culture and the Arts, Hon Sheila McHale, announced that the book Cleared Out, which tells the story of the first contact between a group of Martu women and children and white Australia in 1964, has won the $20,000 Premier’s Prize in the 2005 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards.
Written by Sue Davenport, Peter Johnson and Yuwali, the authors also won the West Australian History Award. You can check the complete list of Winners, read the Judges' Report, and view the Gallery of the Winners.
Twenty-seven books/scripts were shortlisted in seven categories from the 134 entries. Entries were received in the following categories: Fiction, Poetry, Writing for Young Adults, Children’s books, Scripts, Non-fiction and West Australian History, with prize-money of $7,500 is awarded to winners in each category.
The Judging Panel for the 2005 Awards is Professor Brian Dibble, Ms Lucille Fisher, Professor Ed Jaggard and Ms Chloe Mauger.
Entries for the 2006 WA Premier's Book Awards will be called for in late October 2006 with a closing date of 8 January 2007.

Previous Years' Winners
Annual literary awards were inaugurated by the Western Australian Government in 1982 to honour and celebrate the literary achievements of Western Australian writers. Until 1990 they were called the WA Week Literary Awards. They are now known as the Western Australian Premier's Book Awards. Lists of previous winners can be viewed by year or category.
