Bright gets big chance as Emblen ruled out

Thursday, 27 October, 2005 - 5:58PM
After consultation with NZ Knights FC medical staff, Manager John Adshead has put defender Neil Emblen on the injured list for the minimum four week period, effectively removing him from the squad during that time to allow recuperation from his knee injury. After early improvement led to hopes of a quick return to action, the recovery has slowed this week leading to today’s decision.

“It is disappointing for us and also for Neil, said Adshead at training today.

“His attitude has been superb and every effort has been made on his part to get back as soon as possible given our current position on the table but reality is that we have had to remove that temptation to allow him to recover fully.”

With Emblen off the squad of 20 for a minimum 4 weeks, Adshead has decided on 19 year old Kris Bright as a short term replacement. The tall striker has made a huge impression as an apprentice.

“We have a number of problem areas to solve within the squad but the immediate concern is a lack of goals. Rather than bring Jeremy Christie in (as he did to cover Danny Hay) I have decided to give Kris his chance. He and other youngsters Jeremy Brockie, Cole Tinkler and Sam Jasper have come on superbly since beginning work fulltime with the Knights. Given our situation Bright is the logical choice, he is a target man, has the physical presence and has done well all season against Hay, Emblen and Tambouras. This is a great opportunity for the lad to test his development in the Hyundai A-League proper.”

The Knights acknowledge the assistance of NZFC club Waitakere United, with whom Bright was registered to play for prior to today’s news. Adshead says they have understood the situation.

“Rex Dawkins (Waitakere United Chairman) has been totally supportive, despite the disruption it may cause to his side in the NZFC. Both Kris and Sam Jasper are registered with Waitakere and while Rex is disappointed for his club, he and the club have cooperated fully and understand the opportunity for Kris and the Knights immediate needs.”

It is possible Bright could be available for consideration to play the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday if the necessary paperwork is completed in time.

Kris Bright will be available for interviews following training on Friday (interviews from approx midday – training 10am to midday), as will Knights Manager John Adshead.

The squad to play the Mariners will be named following this training session.
