[77-07-25 3-34 Devo Starwood]

What would have happened to Devo if not for Slash? They would have had the career they had, but it probably would have taken longer to take off. Would they be labeled punk and would punks be called Devo? Who knows, who cares. But it was Slash who ran full-page spreads on them, it was Slash that gave them a coming out party. And they debuted at a Slash benefit at Larchmont Hall, introducing them to LA punk. I'm just glad it all worked out. They were a lot of fun and very inventive.

I have no idea when I shot Devo cos they played the Starwood a few times summer and fall, 1977. So how could they wear the short pants and the spud bags in the following shots on the same night? Which by the way, the trash bag spuds are EXTREMELY RARE shots cos they only dressed like this ONCE. I have spent DAYS and HOURS trying to figure out when I shot them. I have more shots, but this gives you an idea. If you know dates, lemme know and I'll update this! Thanks.

Choukette holding French fanzine "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Oh the stories I could tell you about Choukette! She worked at "Lady Snow," a head shop specializing in items related to gettting high. It was on Cresecent Heights immediately south of Sunset, where the big Virgin Megastore now resides. She was rail thin, with the thickest accent, but such a sweetie, although out of touch with reality (which was why it was so much fun listening to her) and rarely on time.

Mark Martinez and I had a lot of fun hanging out with her. He swears she had a pet monkey, but pul-eze! He remembers her yelling at the monkey in her apartment. She must have had friends visiting with a monkey. She was not the type to have pets. Most of us were far too busy, although I always lived with my very favorite cat, Amanda. French photographer, Phillipe Mogane, who also worked on the fanzine, thought that funny too. Choukette and a monkey! She's now married with children. The best to you, mon ami!
