Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy

WHAT IS NATUROPATHY?
Naturopathy is an umbrella term that encompasses many forms of complementary and natural medicine modalities. A naturopath is a person who practices several of these forms or modalities and who also has a solid grounding in the medical sciences. The three major modalities within naturopathy are nutrition, homeopathy and herbal medicine.

ACNT trained naturopaths are holistic practitioners who throughout this course will gain extensive knowledge in a variety of health sciences including chemistry, biochemistry, pathology, symptomatology, diagnosis and pharmacology. In addition to these health sciences a wide range of natural therapies subjects such as herbal medicine, nutrition, homeopathy, iridology and other naturopathic modalities are also taught ensuring that ACNT graduates are highly regarded professionals. Upon successful completion of this course graduates will be awarded the following qualifications: the Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, the Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine, the Advanced Diploma of Homeopathy and the Diploma of Nutrition.

The modules may be studied face to face or by distance education, or a combination of the two.

ACNT provides support tutorials for students who choose to study the University of New England (UNE) degree option. These tutorials assist students with each UNE lesson and also ensure that the entire class is progressing at the same pace.

CLINICAL TRAINING
Fixed programme students must complete 500 hours of practical clinical training during years two and three of their studies. This training is undertaken at the Student Clinic in Glebe. Due to the Clinic schedule study days at ACNT may change during the progression of the course and may include Saturdays. For distance education students outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area please contact the Distance Education Division to make alternative arrangements for clinical training.

FIRST AID
Each student is required to complete SCI 146 First Aid Basic as part of this course. This certificate must be produced prior to the commencement of clinical training hours. Please refer to the section on First Aid on page 15 of the prospectus. Fees are extra and must be paid directly to the relevant organisation.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND (UNE) EXCLUSIVE ARRANGEMENT - DEGREE QUALIFICATION OPTION
Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) - Awarded by UNE (CRICOS Provider 00003G)

This course is offered as a dual programme in collaboration with UNE, whereby students who decide to study the degree option, co-enrol into UNE's Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) degree. In 2005 ACNT was appointed as UNE's exclusive collaborating partner for the delivery of this concurrent programme. This collaborative UNE/ACNT dual programme is recognised by the industry in Australia and around the world as producing naturopaths of the highest calibre.

UNE is Australia's oldest regional university and is internationally recognised as one of Australia's leading teaching, training and research universities. Upon successful completion of this programme graduates will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) from UNE in addition to the Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy, the Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine, the Advanced Diploma of Homeopathy and the Diploma of Nutrition from ACNT, making this programme the most comprehensive naturopathic training programme in Australia.

The UNE degree being offered as part of this dual programme has recognition all around Australia and offers pathways to research and coursework Honours, Master and PhD programmes.

Studying this dual programme offers many advantages. Students will study all of the naturopathic subjects and medical science subjects at ACNT, whilst UNE will provide Health Science units by distance education, which are complementary to and in addition to the ACNT studies.

This collaborative method of learning enables students to have access to university education for their health sciences, and naturopathic principles and practise from Australia's leading natural therapies college.

COMMONWEALTH SUPPORTED PLACES (formerly HECS) FOR UNE UNITS
Australian residents who are eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (formerly HECS) need make no up front payments for the UNE component of their course. Further information is available at UNE Students Fees

For information on UNE fees please contact the university directly. All students are required to also pay an annual UNE General Service Fee. For 2005 this fee was $80 per semester.

STUDIES AT UNE
A total of eight UNE units must be completed during the programme, with each unit lasting one semester.

For the first four units students must attend a residential school which is usually organised during ACNT semester holidays and is held on the UNE campus in Armidale, NSW.

Students then complete the remaining four units including Research Methods in Health which focuses on the development of skills in accessing and critically analysing information relevant to the naturopathic profession. This unit is recognised as a distinguishing feature of the UNE degree. Students may also select from a range of electives including Pathophysiology, Stress Physiology and the Biology of Ageing.

ENROLMENT
Students must enrol at ACNT prior to applying for admission to the Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) at UNE. UNE Application for Admission forms are available from ACNT once students have successfully enrolled at ACNT.
