LAMBCHOP Damaged (Merge) Rating: NNN

There's a story circulating that Candi Staton turned down I Would Have Waited Here All Day, the song Lambchop's Kurt Wagner pitched to her, because of the use of the word 'dick.' It's more likely that Wagner's demo just put her to sleep. Lambchop have certainly had their fair share of sedate moments and tranquil passages on previous albums, but the even slower 'n' softer approach of Damaged (out Tuesday) makes it by far the best cure for insomnia they've ever devised. Perhaps because Wagner rarely raises his voice above a pillow whisper, or perhaps due to the feather-stroke string sweetening, even though the songwriting's tight, the uniformly delicate touch of adult contemporary arrangements will leave you struggling to stay awake till the album's end. Don't even think of putting this on while operating heavy machinery.
