Downer EDI and Bombardier to supply rail cars to Queensland Rail under contract valued at $212M - [back]
Tuesday, 2 November 2004
Downer EDI Limited (Downer EDI) today announced that its Rail division, EDI Rail, in joint venture with Bombardier Transportation (Australia) Pty Limited, has received an order from Queensland Rail (QR) for the supply of 24 three-car sets, comprised of 16 Interurban Multiple Unit (IMU) trains for the Brisbane to Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast rail services and a further 8 Suburban Multiple Unit (SMU) trains for the Brisbane suburban network.

Advice to the market coincides with this morning's announcement in Brisbane of the new contract by the Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, and Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas.

The trains will be supplied by EDI Rail's joint venture with Bombardier at EDI Rail's Maryborough facilities in Queensland, with delivery planned for the period November 2006 to November 2008. The value of the contract is approximately $212 million (EDI Rail share $113 million).

Chief Executive Officer of EDI Rail, Guy Wannop, said the order continues EDI Rail's and the joint venture's long and successful association with QR. "Over the years, all of QR's passenger rail car fleet, including the high tech and successful Cairns Tilt Train, have been built at EDI Rail's Maryborough facilities," Mr Wannop said.

"Winning the new work follows a history and a platform of successful collaboration established with QR, which over the years has evolved to provide vehicles that suit the particular requirements of QR and their rail infrastructure. This enables a low risk development path for the design and supply of the trains," he said.

"The new contract also provides continuity of employment for the skilled labour force we have in Maryborough and allows us to continue our training and skills development commitments in the Maryborough region," Mr Wannop said.

The new order continues EDI Rail's successful association with Bombardier in the supply of rail passenger vehicles from Maryborough. The joint venture is currently building 31 trains (three-car sets) for the Western Australian Government's new Perth Metro Rail program. The first of these three-car sets entered service in Perth on time and on budget in early October 2004.
