Here are some factors to consider when buying, owning or loaning your own horse or pony:
- Looking after a horse is a very time consuming hobby,
- Be realistic about your own capabilities - this is essential in determining the type of horse you need,
- Buying and looking after a horse is a huge financial commitment, so set yourself a realistic purchase budget,
- You will need to consider where and how you will keep the horse. This decision will effect you financially as well as how much time you need to commit to the horse,
- Decide what essential qualities the horse must have and do not be in a rush to buy,
- Consider the long-term future of the horse. Do not be under the illusion that it is easy to sell or re-home an unwanted or outgrown horse,
- When you have found a suitable horse it is strongly recommended that you arrange for a vet to carry out a pre-purchase veterinary examination,
- When loaning a horse, make sure that you have a good loan agreement that protects both parties.
