WILDALERT: ORV Amusement Park Proposed Next to Sonoran National Monument (07/27/2006)
The Sonoran Desert National Monument is the heart of one of North America's largest and most diverse desert ecosystems. However, a private group has asked the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to hand over a square-mile of public lands practically adjacent to the Sonoran Monument so that the group can build an off-road vehicle theme park. Nothing could be more inappropriate. The resulting damage would irreversibly harm the Monument.

Over the strong objections of Native people, wildlife biologists, sportsmen's groups, and the general public, the Bureau of Land Management remains intent on leasing one of the most remarkable wetlands complexes on the planet. The place is the Teshekpuk Lake Special Area in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A), the largest single block of wild public land left in the United States.

WILDALERT: Legislation Would Remove Offshore Drilling Ban (06/26/2006)
This week the House of Representatives will be voting on whether to lift the 25-year old ban on drilling in ecologically sensitive areas of America's coastlines. H.R. 4761, the "Deep Ocean Energy Resources Act," would remove the ban on oil and gas development off the West coast, East Coast, and Florida coastlines.

WILDALERT: Oregon Roadless Area Timber Sale Announced, Despite Public Opposition (06/07/2006)
The Forest Service announced last week that it will begin selling timber in Oregon's roadless areas -- despite strong public support for the protection of these areas. The Mike's Gulch Timber Sale would be the first logging project in a national forest roadless area since the Roadless Area Conservation Rule was adopted in January 2001.
 
WILDALERT: Critical Areas of Kenai Peninsula Would be Open to Snowmobiles Under Proposal (06/06/2006)
At 5.5 million acres, the Chugach National Forest in southcentral Alaska is the nation's second largest. One of its best-known wonders is the Kenai Peninsula, rich in natural beauty, fish and wildlife. The U.S. Forest is developing a winter use plan for the area that could surrender 85 percent of it to snowmobile use. We need your help to prevent that.

The Forest Service will be holding public meetings, starting May 22nd, to discuss its Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Allegheny National Forest Plan revision, which includes recommendations for new wilderness on the forest; the DEIS will be released May 17th.
 
WILDALERT: Ask Your Representative To Protect Our National Forests Vote No On HR 4200 (05/11/2006)
Early next week, the House will vote on a bill, HR 4200, that could cause serious harm to the long-term health of our public forests. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) is the lead sponsor of this bill, which would exclude the public from decisions regarding the management of our public lands. The bill also ignores important scientific research, threatens the Endangered Species Act, could increase the risk of wildfire and leaves roadless areas, old growth forests, and other special areas unprotected.

WILDALERT: Tongass National Forest, America's largest, needs your help (05/08/2006)
Within the next week, Congress will consider an amendment to prohibit taxpayer dollars from being used to build new logging roads in the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. If their amendment passes, it would eliminate yet another government subsidy and protect the Tongass from further logging.

WILDALERT: Senate Votes for Arctic Refuge Drilling (03/17/2006)
On March 16, 2006, the Senate narrowly passed (51-49) an FY07 budget resolution that could lead to opening the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling. The extraordinarily close vote on this resolution is an indication of how much your emails and phone calls helped, and just how controversial this issue remains. The battle for the Refuge now moves to the House, which is expected to take up its own FY07 budget resolution the week of March 26th.
 
WILDALERT: Proposed Road Would Damage Great Smoky Mountains National Park Permanently (03/16/2006)
Despite its own research to the contrary, the National Park Service is proposing to construct a new road in the Great Smoky Mountains that would impair park resources and be a massive boondoggle. The road, to be constructed along the North Shore of Fontana Lake, would cost around $590 million and require $14 million in annual maintenance costs, this at a time when the entire park's annual operating budget typically falls over $11 million short of actual need.

WILDALERT: Plan Threatens Arizona Monuments' Most Prized Resources (03/10/2006)
The Grand Canyon-Parashant and the Vermilion Cliffs were added to America's treasured roster of National Monuments so their exceptional values could be protected forever. The challenge for us is to ensure that the promise is fulfilled. How hard that might be is now evident in a draft management plan for the areas that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has released for public comment. It's a plan long on roads and motors, pitifully short on protection for priceless resources.

The Bush Administration has initiated yet another study--the fourth--to justify continuing snowmobile use in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. WILDALERT: Protect New Hampshire Wilderness (02/21/2006)
Last November, the Forest Service released its plan for the White Mountain National Forest, recommending that Congress designate 34,500 acres of Wilderness in the Sandwich Range and Wild River. The New Hampshire Congressional delegation has been supportive of a new wilderness bill that would include these Forest Service recommendations, but a wilderness bill should also include additional areas in the Sandwich Range, Pemigewasset, and other areas beloved by New Hampshire residents.

The BLM has extended the comment deadline for its draft plan for the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument in north-central Montana to April 26th.  Open houses have also been scheduled around Montana. Unfortunately, their draft plan  won't protect this magnificent place. It's clear the BLM needs to hear from you.
 
WILDALERT: Bush Budget Puts Our Public Lands on Blue-Light Special (02/15/2006)
As much as 800,000 acres of Americans' public land would be sold into private hands under one egregious provision of President Bush's proposed budget. Astonishingly, less than two months ago, bipartisan opposition in the Congress defeated a similar scheme. This absurd proposal deserves the same reaction from all of us. WILDALERT: Great News--House Removes Arctic Refuge Drilling (11/10/2005)
The House Rules Committee has removed from the House Budget Reconciliation bill the provision that would have opened the Arctic Refuge to development. The provision that would have made it easier to drill for oil and gas in coastal areas currently off limits to development was also removed.
 
WILDALERT: Arctic Refuge Update (11/04/2005)
In a close vote along mostly party lines on Nov. 3rd, the Senate approved the 2006 Budget Reconciliation bill, which would, among other things, open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil development.  The focus next turns to the House, where a significant number of Republicans are outspoken in their opposition to Arctic Refuge drilling in the Budget Bill, thereby casting serious doubt on whether a bill with Arctic drilling in it can pass the House at all.

The House of Representatives this week will take up the Interior Appropriations bill that funds our land management agencies. For the first time ever, the Congress proposes to eliminate funding for all new land acquisitions in Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and to slash funding for the Forest Legacy program. But in a stark display of twisted priorities, the bill would continue massive subsidies for road-building and logging on our largest national forest, the Tongass in Alaska.

WILDALERT: Interior Secretary Gale Norton Should Protect Otero Mesa (05/12/2005)
Under a plan finalized by the U.S. Department of Interior last January, 95% of wild Otero Mesa, in New Mexico, is open to oil and gas development. In an effort to stop this ill-conceived plan, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has filed suit against Interior Secretary Gale Norton for failing to adequately protect Otero Mesa. Secretary Norton can put a stop to the leasing plan.

For more than 20 years, the U.S. Forest Service has banned snowmobiles from the proposed Hoover Wilderness Addition in California. Unfortunately, this prohibition is blatantly violated and snowmobiles are a common sight. The Forest Service has stood by idly and done nothing. Now, instead of taking steps to enforce the existing law, the agency is proposing to change the rules to accommodate unlawful snowmobile use!
