The Polk Street Block Party is a community-wide multicultural festival. The once-thriving and rapidly emerging Polk Street, in the heart of downtown Amarillo, is transformed into a musical theme park. Six city blocks are closed to traffic to create a party space for a large venue of things to see and do.

Behind-the-scenes support from numerous community groups is inclusive, representing every economic, social, and racial segment of town. From the City's loan of equipment and labor, the County's cooperation in supplying clean-up labor, the local magistrate's assistance in providing community service workers, local and national business sponsorships and in-kind donations, individuals' and groups' donations of time, money, and creative ideas, this community-wide effort is all-encompassing.

The Block Party was initially conceived as a way of bringing more public exposure to the downtown area, while hosting a fundraiser that is accessible and affordable to everyone in Amarillo.

Last year, 10,000 people attended the Block Party, 33-percent above the targeted attendance. Ethnicity breakdowns of partygoers mirrored those for the entire city.

With the local population at 175,000, nearly 10-percent of the city attended the event. Because the Block Party is marketed as an adult event, this high proportion of attendance is even more significant.

The Polk Street Block Party was the most successful fundraiser in Amarillo in 2000, based on profits and attendance. The result of this success is that Center City's organization has been able to take its fundraising, promotion, and community efforts to a new level.

Attending the Polk Street Block Patry is a great way to show your support not only for Center City, but also:

  • Amarillo Area Law Enforcement Lions Club
  • Amarillo Youth Athletics
  • Catholic Family Services
  • Downtown Kiwanis
  • Genesis Soccer Club
  • Life/Run Centers for Independent Living
  • Make-A-Wish Foundation
  • Maverick Boys and Girls Club
  • Moose Lodge #1361
  • NAACP
  • Palo Duro Alumni Association
  • SOS
  • Texas Department of Public Safety Officers' Association
  • United Citizen's Forum
