Science Olympiad team sets sights on state competition after winning regionals
Members of Vestal Senior High School’s Science Olympiad team are gearing up for the state Science Olympiad competition being held at West Point Military Academy on March 10-11. The Vestal team earned a spot in the state competition after placing first in last month’s regional competition held at Binghamton University, beating out 15 other teams from the Greater Binghamton area.
At the regional competition, Vestal was represented by two 15-member teams and competed in all 21 events. Vestal Team 1 placed first in the competition, earning a score of 51. Team 1 had eight first-place medals, three second-place medals, and four third-place medals. Vestal Team 2 came in fourth with a score of 114. Team 2 had two first places, two second places and four third-place finishes.
In addition to the team’s success at BU, Vestal Science Olympiad members had an outstanding showing at January’s Science Olympiad Invitational held in Goshen, NY, placing first out of 26 teams from three states.
The team coaches are Vestal science teachers Chris Livingstone, Dave Porigow, Nancy Harrison, and Tracy Suggs. Science Olympiad captains are Kristen Pueschel, Norah Pueschel, Scott Lowenstein and Eric Chen.
