Welcome to kstoradio.com!

You can listen to KSTO in the honor houses or academic buildings by hooking up a stereo receiver to the campus cable.

If you'd like to make a donation to the station please write a check to St. Olaf College and send it to the address below. We would greatly appreciate it as we haven't achieved our goal for our pledge drive yet. Seriously, every cent counts.

If you are a KSTO alumn, please contact us with your KSTO memories. Also, if you have any pictures, please send them to us to post on the web.

Two favorite moments:
I was sorting the latest stack of station copy LPs shipped to KSTO by the various record labels, and a new release from Columbia caught my eye. Columbia slapped a big silver star on the album cover when it announced a new artist, so it was hard to miss. The album jacket featured a guy in a sheepskin jacket that was buttoned the wrong way, and his guitar was strung backwards (Columbia had reversed the photo).

This was enough to get my attention, so I gave the LP a ride and was both fascinated and horrified. This guy was chugging away at Woody Guthrie songs in an original style with a truly awful voice. Ole Choir material, he wasn't. I was intrigued enough to play most of the album on my 10 PM jazz show. For the one and only time, I was getting phone calls, and it was love or hate from the start. I'm pretty certain that we were one of the first stations in the country to air Bob Dylan's first album. At the time, I didnít know that one guy from Duluth was playing another.

Another story: On one infamous occasion, it might have been 1962, we sponsored a live concert on campus by three Twin Cities blues-folk guys, Dave Ray, Spider John Koerner and Tony Glover. They gave us permission to record the concert and one of the KSTO engineers, Al Higel, released it as an album years later.

Dave, Spider and Tony drove down for an 8 o'clock concert and couldn't find the gym. While driving around, they were picked up by a campus security patrol who was highly suspicious of these three scruffy characters. The night watchman, Bud, finally got a hold of us, and we bailed them out. The boys had put away a fair amount of beer, and were in a mellow mood by concert time. At one point they had to stop a song and start over. On the Figel album, the number is entitled, "Drunken Instrumental." St. Olaf hadn't seen many concerts of this variety before.
