Davis shines in debut for 'Cats

By BRAD STRATTONbio

The Penn State women's basketball team's plans were simple.

Stop Villanova's Jenea Skeeters, which in turn stops Villanova.

The No. 11 Lady Lions succeeded in stopping Skeeters, holding her to only four points. But while they were able to stop Skeeters, they couldn't stop Wildcats freshman Katie Davis.

Davis scored a game-high 18 points in her first collegiate game as Penn State rolled, 76-54, against the Wildcats, Saturday night in The Bryce Jordan Center.

The Wildcats came into town down two regular starters, with guard Mimi Riley out with a foot injury and center Brandi Barnes not making the trip after a death in the family.

With Villanova (0-1) playing two freshman in the starting lineup — forward Nicole Drunkenmiller and guard Trish Juhline — the Lions focused on stopping Skeeters, who shot 1-for-9 from the floor in 36 minutes of action.

Drunkenmiller finished with seven points and Juhline added 14, but Davis would come off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points.

"I thought some of our players got caught up and tried to play with them (the Lions)," Villanova women's basketball coach Harry Perretta said, "which we're not good enough to do that. And they abandoned the offense. I thought Katie did an excellent job of staying in the offense."

With no games to rely on from past seasons, the Lions (1-0) found it difficult to scout the freshman from North East, Md. The two teams exchanged tapes of its respective exhibition games, where Davis averaged 8.5 points.

"She (Davis) did nothing in the exhibition tape," Penn State women's basketball coach Rene Portland said. "Number Four did absolutely nothing. But she didn't get 20 (points) and that's our goal.

"She got 18 and we never want anybody to get over 20 on us."

Whether or not Davis will continue to be a major offensive threat for the Wildcats is unknown. But in her first game at the collegiate level, Davis showed plenty of potential despite trying to adjust to the college setting.

"I was extremely nervous," Davis said. "I'm always nervous before every game. It's natural for me."
