And they’re away –the Caravan Safari sets off on the outback discovery trail

A release by the Minister for Small Business and Tourism, the Hon Fran Bailey MP

The first of three Caravan Safari Trails planned for 2006 officially set off from the Caravan and Camping Supershow today on a journey of discovery from Sydney to Cairns covering 3,600km.

“I was delighted to officially launch the first Australian Caravan Safari Trail here in Sydney today, and watch the spectacular sight of 37 vehicles, including caravans, motorhomes, campervans and camper trailers from across the nation start off on this inaugural safari,” Fran Bailey, Minister for Small Business and Tourism said today.

“The safari participants will be treated to a variety of uniquely Australian experiences while on the discovery trail, including an opal tour at Lightening Ridge, the artesian hot spa at Blackall, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the Qantas Heritage Centre at Longreach and a seafood banquet at Karumba. The participants will finish their once in a lifetime trip with dinner at the ‘Flames of the Forest’ Spectacular near Port Douglas.”

Recent research by Tourism Research Australia has identified that there are over 334,000 caravans and campervans in use in Australia. In addition, caravan and campers in Australia spent $6.7 billion in 2003-04, contributing 76.3 million visitor nights. The report also shows that international visitors who used caravan or camping accommodation spent 40 per cent of their nights in regional Australia compared to 18 per cent for those not using caravan or camping accommodation.

“Tourism plays an important role in regional Australia, with over 200,000 jobs in regional and rural Australia being directly attributed to tourism. Initiatives such as the Australian Caravan Safari Trails are playing a vital role in boosting tourism to regional Australia, contributing to the economic sustainability of local communities. This project has been strongly supported by the Australian Government, demonstrated by the $250,000 sponsorship grant provided to help establish these three pilot safaris,” concluded Fran Bailey.

Two further safaris will be conducted this year. The second Safari, The Wildflowers & Goldfields Trail will be held in Western Australia during August and September to coincide with the spectacular wildflowers in that state.  The final Safari for the year, The Murray and Wine Trail will see participants travel through Victoria and South Australia in November and December. Further information on the safaris can be found at www.caravansafari.com.au
