Friday is ‘De’ Day Monday 19 June, 2006

FIFA will not make a decision on how to punish Italy’s elbow-wielding Daniele De Rossi until Friday.

The Roma youngster was dismissed in disgrace on Saturday night after his unprovoked attack on USA striker Brian McBride in the 1-1 draw.

The midfielder is subsequently definitely out of the Czech Republic game on Thursday, but is also likely to be banned for a longer amount of time – possibly as many as six matches.

“De Rossi will speak to [boss Marcello] Lippi at some stage today,” Giancarlo Abete, head of Italy’s World Cup delegation, stated.

“A decision by FIFA will be made on June 23, if there are no changes to that plan, and we therefore have until June 22 to present them with a statement from the boy.

“We’ll be looking to get this sent off to them by tomorrow at the latest, then we can just concentrate on the Czech Republic tie.”

Opinion: An elbow to victory
Italy’s World Cup bid took an unexpected twist with a reckless Daniele De Rossi elbow, but Marcello Lippi doesn’t come away from the USA draw totally blameless. More
