Vanuatu Athletic Federation is still in suspension by the International Athletic Federation but that does not mean athletes are also penalized. Recently Vanuatu's Katura Marae and Moses Kamut were the only two sport persons to represent the country at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In 1996 I had the thrill of attending the Atlanta Games as team doctor for the team from Vanuatu, a sort of Equatorial Guinea of the track world. I experienced the games from a much different perspective. Vanuatu, where I had lived in 1995, is a primitive South Pacific nation, deprived of red lights, yellow cabs and golden arches.
