Orientation Phase 1.
The first two days of orientation will be provided by the Teacher. Specific time allocated to each topic will be based on discussion between the new staff member, the teacher, and the Unit Manager.
Resource information will be loaned to the new staff member for a one month period, (subject to availability), this will include copies of the Gynecology Orientation Reference Manual (1998) and the Gynecology Education Days Resource Manual (1998).

Mature Women's Health Program

Orientation Phase 2.
The new staff member will be assigned to work with a preceptor. The preceptor and new staff member will determine learning needs and the related strategies. Refer to the attached page for the Orientation Process: Gynecology Nursing Care.

Responsibilities of the new staff member:

  • Active participation in the design of the individualized orientation plan.
  • Liaison with the preceptor to identify and prioritize short and long term learning needs and to set a plan to meet these needs. The plan should include mutually agreeable strategies and time frames.
  • Utilizes available resources.
Role of the Preceptor:
The Preceptor Role is that of collaboration with the new staff member. Responsibilities of the preceptor include:
  • Acts as a role model.
  • Provides orientation on the unit including: review of clinical practice; work organization and time management; reviews channels of communication with all members of the health care team; and reviews documentation requirements.
  • Liaison with the new staff member to identify and prioritize short and long term learning needs and to set a plan to meet these needs. The plan should include mutually agreeable strategies and time frames.
  • Facilitates problem solving and learning opportunities on the unit. Provides feedback and collaboratively evaluates how learning needs are being met, on an ongoing basis.
  • Acts as a resource for the new staff member.
