This year, the council has further committed to implementing environmental best practices throughout its operations. In doing this we are looking at the priorities set at a national level under the 'Sustainable Development Programme of Action' and the 'Growth and Innovation' framework, and the regional focus on transport and growth.

Our aim is to develop a culture of environmental awareness and best practice as an example to North Shore businesses and the community.

This will include developing environmental management systems, the sustainable procurement of goods and services, and looking at ways of becoming more energy efficient, minimising waste, saving water, and reducing CO² emissions with our sustainable transport initiatives.

We have already made significant progress including the purchase of the council's first hybrid fleet car, development of staff travel plans and an internal programme to improve energy efficiency.
