Buffalo Waterfront

Welcome to the City of Buffalo's Waterfront Web-page. This site will provide you with information on many of the exciting developments occurring along our waterfront: from the redevelopment of the Erie Canal Harbor in our downtown waterfront to the preparation of a comprehensive plan to guide the future development of our waterfront – the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan.

Magnificently situated at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers, Buffalo is a waterfront city. The history of the City of Buffalo is firmly rooted in its waterfront and the economic opportunities it created. Once and still the hub of commerce, trade and industry that shaped our past economic prosperity, we have been transforming our waterfront to one that is more publicly accessible and that is becoming the focal point for social and recreational activity. We need to reconnect with our waterfront to grow again. As our new Comprehensive Plan rightfully emphasizes, our waterfront provides a quality of life amenity for our citizens that is a key to our future economic prosperity.

Although we have much work to be done to truly capture the assets of our waterfront – and you will find information on this page that describes over $100 million in public investments along our waterfront -- we have accomplished much already. From the recently completed Tow Path Park along the Niagara River at the foot of Hertel Avenue to Gallagher Beach and the soon-to-be established State Park on Lake Erie, there are many places and opportunities to enjoy our waterfront today. Please use this web-site as a virtual window to explore our waterfront – past, present, and future; but I encourage you to visit our waterfront in person in order to truly realize the wonderful asset it is.
