Gus George Academy

Now accepting applications for the February 5, 2007

Basic Peace Officer Class

The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy of Fort Bend County (originally Fort Bend County Law Enforcement Academy) was certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) on May 1, 1985.

Since opening day, the Academy has made over 1000 presentations, totaling some 35,000 hours to more than 18,000 officers.

The Academy staff, frequently attends meetings, conferences, schools and seminars throughout the State in an effort to remain "up to date" on the needs and demands of law enforcement training.

The Academy meets or exceeds TCLEOSE requirements regarding training certification of all licensing courses, including the Basic Peace Officer Course.

The goal and mission of the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy is to provide innovative training as the need is identified on a continuing basis. "Hands On" training coupled with post tests have become an integral part of our course planning and presentation. Evaluations and reviews convince us that we must continue this trend in law enforcement training.

The Academy has gained the reputation of being one of the finest small Academies in the State.

The Academy is a well designed facility. It is located directly behind the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department in Richmond, Texas. The facility was completed and occupied in February of 1986.

Facilities and Instructional Resources

The "training" capabilities design is first and foremost as reflected by the following:

  • Two large dedicated classrooms
  • Conference/classroom
  • Training room
  • Armory
  • Video room
  • Break/lounge area
  • One acre containing an obstacle course and jogging track
  • F.A.T.S.IV (Firearms Training System)
  • Large, hard surface parking lot

All instructors who are involved in academy presentations must hold a TCLEOSE Instructor certificate or acceptable professional credentials. The Academy continues to increase an already impressive "instructor corps" by rigid screening of applicants for two Basic Police Instructor courses each year.

Additionally, qualified professionals are continually brought into our academy structure from in and out of our immediate area for specific course presentations.

Kids 'N Cops

This program puts Deputies of the Sheriff's Department in the school classrooms. It teaches students about drugs and other dangers that they might encounter. Each summer, they provide summer camps to keep the students occupied.

Crime Prevention

The unit is designed to provide the most to-date methods of preventing property crimes and personal protection. The unit does home surveys and, if your residence passes, most insurance companies allow a discount on your homeowners insurance. Deputy Carl Spradley is in charge of the unit.
