John Kerry, Superhero

Listen closely and tell anyone you know who is still thinking about voting for Bush: has Bush ever, personally, faced down anyone other than with a chant of "Drink, drink, drink"? Has he ever gone against someone who was really, truly powerful in order to place the good of the people above his own good? No. Heroes do that - they don't care what's in their way - they will face down evil, no matter how powerful. And they don't bother with those who are too weak to fight. It's why the latest news from Iraq fanned the fire: those in charge have screwed us over again, and Kerry's ready to bring the superhero costume out. Call him "the Winter Soldier."

Kerry's done a fuck of a lot more than pull a guy out of a river. And the fact that America doesn't know that says a great deal about how we negotiate our desolate political landscape.

Thanks and accolades to Hellblazer for the pointer to this excellent piece from Rude Pundit.

"100's" of Supporters

Atrios once again points out distortions by the media. CNN reported "hundreds" of supporters at the Clinton-Kerry rally today. Uh, maybe they need glasses?

The Big Dog is Back

Just warms my heart to see Bill up and out on the campaign trail. I'm sure he was more tired than he let on, but that just goes to show what a true party soldier he is. Glad to see the Dems reclaiming him.

America - Fuck Yeah!

Sweet Geezus, Batman. Matt and Trey continue to cause my jaw to drop and my sides to cramp up from belly laughs. "Team America" is a cavalcade of obscenity and satire - bless them! See it. Give them your money. They occupy an important extreme in our bizarre, grotesque culture. And they're CU Alums - Go Buffs!

Casualities? What Casualities?

Robertson, in an interview with CNN that aired Tuesday night, said God had told him the war would be messy and a disaster. When he met with Bush in Nashville, Tenn., before the war Bush did not listen to his advice, Robertson said, and believed Saddam Hussein was an evil tyrant who needed to be removed.

"He was just sitting there, like, 'I'm on top of the world,' and I warned him about this war," Robertson said.

"I had deep misgivings about this war, deep misgivings. And I was trying to say, 'Mr. President, you better prepare the American people for casualties.' 'Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties.' 'Well,' I said, 'it's the way it's going to be.' And so, it was messy. The Lord told me it was going to be, A, a disaster and, B, messy."

Why does Pat Robertson hate freedom?

Why?

For me, it took the tragedy of Sherwood's death to remove the security blanket of righteousness. I don't wish tragedy on others, so I pray others will take an initiative toward being rational, truthful and unafraid on their own.

Those are the simple keys toward making the tough decisions we are now faced with. We have a president to choose. We have a war that we can continue or end. We have soldiers who every day wake up to face the same potential consequences my brother faced. Yet they still go out into the desert and do their job. We can all agree that they are good Americans.

And good Americans, above all, value truth. Sherwood didn't die in vain. But the war in Iraq is still being fought in vain. We have acquiesced to an agenda that has killed our brothers and sisters, raided our Treasury and fractured our moral standing in the world. The legacy of Sherwood's service will only be honored when we all demand truth in our politicians, demand that they too serve with honor and integrity.

Demanding that, I believe, is the best way that we can honor a dead soldier.

Geezus, how many more of these heartwrenching accounts by the families of dead and maimed American soldiers will it take for people to wake up? I realize that's an abundantly rhetorical question, and that I'm far from the first (more like the ba-jillionth) person to point out the horrible waste of it all. It's my blog and I'll be trite if I want to, trite if I want to, trite if I want to ... do-bee-do-bee-do...

Breaking Ranks - Service Members Speak Out Against the War

“Everyone wants this to be a good war so they can sleep at night. But guys like me know it’s not a good war. There’s no such thing as a good war.”

Ha! A Ballmer Mea Culpa

How swiftly thought evolves in the wonderful world of Ballmer! First, iPods are full of "stolen" music, next he forgets what he said, but suggests that it might be anything that isn't a Windows Media Player that's full of stolen music, and now iPod owners turn out to be the most law-abiding people in the world.

Although, the apology was part commercial, part backhanded dis of iPod users, but oh well.

Rumsfeld: No 'Hard Evidence' of Iraq-Al Qaeda Link

OK. Let's try this one more time for you folks that haven't grok-ed that there was no link between 9/11 and Saddam. Repeat after Rummy:

"To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two,"

Steve Ballmer Can Kiss My A**

Steve Ballmer, MSFT CEO/Monkey Boy, asserts that most songs on iPods are 'stolen."

Hey, Steve! As an iPod owner, I take umbrage with that remark. Thanks to Apple's excellent iTunes software and my incredibly easy to use iBook, I have scanned in my entire, legally-obtained song library to the tune of 6+ gigs and loaded it onto my little darling. When I was enslaved to the Borg Empire, I seem to remember being innundated with any number of Wintel-oriented P2P tools (Napster, Grokster, Streamcast, Aimster, Kazaa), all of which are in no way inhibited by Windows' supposed DRM capabilities. Plenty of those still plugged into the Redmond Matrix are doing more file sharing than ever.

Loser.

Blood In the Water

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Via Kos. Bizarre to realize that I'm psyched about a dead heat, but I'll take what I can get! Been actually ignoring politics and news in general for the past few days, and I have to say my mood is improved. Yep, I even blew off the debate, choosing instead to watch the new DVD version of Episode IV. I guess it's like choosing NOT to watch the place kicker attempt that game-winning field goal with one second left in the Super Bowl. I hoped for the best, feared for the worst, and ultimately decided I didn't have the cojones to watch it all go down in real time. Totally happy to see/hear the ongoing positive energy on the Left as a result of Big John's performance.
