Congress Passes NRA-backed “Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006”
The National Rifle Association (NRA) and law-abiding gun owners scored a significant victory yesterday when the United States Congress acted to prohibit the confiscation of legal firearms from law-abiding citizens during states of emergency, barring practices conducted by officials in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. This action was included in the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill that passboth chambers of Congress. This bill now heads to President Bush for his expected signature.
NRA-Backed BATFE Modernization and Reform Bill Passes the U.S. House
The United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 5092, the “Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) Modernization and Reform Act of 2006,” with a bi-partisan vote of 277-131.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) strongly supported H.R. 5092, introduced by Reps. Howard Coble (R-NC) and Bobby Scott (D-VA). Chris W. Cox, NRA-ILA Chief Lobbyist stated, “Today marks a great victory for law-abiding gun owners and retailers across the country. H.R. 5092 makes necessary improvements - and establishes new guidelines - for BATFE investigations. It will curb abuses and provide a streamlined process for all necessary parties.”

The 2006 “Firearms Law & The Second Amendment Symposium” will be held on Saturday, October 7, at George Mason University School of Law, in Arlington, Va. This event is hosted by Law Students for the Second Amendment at GMU, along with The NRA Foundation and NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund. Admission is free.
