In the 1930's the Piper Aircraft Company began production of a new airplane named the Piper Cub or also known as the J-3 Cub. The aircraft became very popular because of it's low acquisition cost and fun to fly quotient for the average person. Tens of thousands were built and sold throughout the 40's and incredibly many still fly today and fill a niche that is still void of new aircraft.

Many aviators and want to be pilots are not necessarily looking for quick and efficient transportation but just a fun way to spend time leisurely in the air. 1940's restored Cubs are now selling for mid to high $30k.

With the advent of the new LSA rule by the FAA, new breath is being breathed into recreational aviation. Not only are new pilots being courted by organizations such as EAA, and AOPA, but also a large push by the FAA is on to bring aviation to persons who might turn their interest to Boating, Classic Cars, or other activities.

The interest from new LSA pilots will not likely see the large growth in new pilots that some expect right away but will likely take place in 18 - 36 months. The real growth in pilots will come from within the current ranks of the pilot community who have not flown for years because of medical issues, interesting affordable airplanes, or costs associated with flying.
