Singing Hot Dog Man Banned
At Comerica Park, one of the most prominent sounds that most fans usually hear is that of Charley, the "Signing Hot Dog Man." Like him or not, and fans are vocal on both sides of the issue, the signing has stopped, at least for now, at Comerica Park. Apparently, Charley has been banned from singing by his superiors at the park.

Some fans, who enjoy Charley's way of selling hot dogs and Coca Cola, have started an online petition requesting he once again be allowed to sing. Over 100 fans have already signed it, and to read their petition, or sign it online, you can visit their website for more information.

Baseball America Draft Chat
Jim Callis of Baseball America had a chat yesterday where he answered questions on the June 8th Major League Baseball Draft. Two questions and answers involved what the Tigers may do with the second overall selection.
Q: Don from Detroit asks:
Any new news on the Tigers potential pick? Who are the top 3 candidates by Detroit?

A: Jim Callis: I'm not sure who their top three candidates are. But Long Beach State RHP Jered Weaver isn't nearly the lock to go No. 1 that he seemed to be 6-8 weeks ago, so the Tigers have a better chance to get him at No. 2 than once thought. We also hear they're very high on Homer Bailey.

Q: Neal from Joliet asks:
Hi. Do you feel that there is validity to the Tigers passing on Weaver? It doesn't seem all that logical to pass on him because his brother didn't work out there. If they do, will the Mets pony up that kind of money? thanks

A: Jim Callis: I don't think they'd pass on Jered because of Jeff, who actually pitched pretty well for Detroit and went in the tank after he got traded. But there are teams out there who prefer other pitchers' stuff to Weaver's pitchability, and Weaver's price tag could make some teams look in another direction. I'd say I'd be surprised if he went past the Mets, but then the draft is always surprising.
So who is Homer Bailey? Bailey is a high school pitcher from Texas, who Baseball America has ranked 6th on their most recent "Draft Tracker" and is the top high school pitching prospect in the draft.

Draft Buzz
The Major League Baseball Draft is coming up on June 7th, and with the 2nd overall pick the Detroit Tigers are set to draft a dominating pitcher. Who that pitcher is though is another question all together.

At first, it seemed the Tigers were locked in on 99 M.P.H. flamethrower Justin Verlander of Old Dominion, who many think may have the best potential of any pitcher in the draft. According to Baseball America though, his struggles this season (151 strikeouts in 106 innings but only a 7-6 record) has dropped Verlander out of the top of the draft due to control and maturity concerns.
[in his final start of the season] Verlander gave up six runs and eight hits in seven innings, but more telling, he lost his composure on the mound, hitting four batters in a game in which he walked just two and had shown good control. "He's got three pitches that would be at least a 70 grade," said one scout who saw his last start, "but the pieces don't come together for him. He's just not mature enough on the mound and off it to put it all together yet."
So if it isn't Verlander, who might the pick be? If the San Diego Padres (who have the #1 selection) take Jeff Weaver's brother Jared, the Tigers may opt for Rice pitcher Jeff Niemann. The Padres, who were set on Weaver early but recently have turned their attention to Niemann, as well as the Tigers, love the 6'9", 260-pound Niemann's 'wicked slider' and command according to Baseball America. Niemann is 5-2 this season with a 2.58 E.R.A., 70 K's in 59 innings. Niemann's problems? Injury concerns including elbow surgery last year and groin problems this season.

Tram on Shelton, Pena, Vina
Tigers Rule 5 Draft selection Chris Shelton has started 4 of the Tigers last 10 games and according to CBS Sportsline, we may be seeing more of him in the coming weeks and months. They quoted manager Alan Trammell as saying that, "I thought he had some quality at-bats. One day leads to two."

As for struggling Carlos Pena, who went 6-6 in yesterday's win over Kansas City, Tram said giving Pena a few days off was good for him.
"Last year when he struggled, we gave him a couple of days off and it was good for him," Manager Alan Trammell said. "It helped him clear his mind. "I think this is a temporary thing. We'll try to get him going. I know there's a small adjustment he's trying to make."
2B Fernando Vina, who has been on the disabled list with a hamstring injury, was supposed to be ready for this weekends series against Baltimore. He however is still a ways away from returning to the lineup.
"Clearly the injury was more than anticipated," manager Alan Trammell said. "He was weak and needed some time to build up strength. He is still a little ways away. He's not going to be ready this weekend, that's for sure."
Vina's injury has opened the door for Omar Infante and Infante has taken full advantage of his time in the lineup. He's hitting .301 this season with two home runs, more than he's had in the last two seasons combined.

Infante to Third?
With the Detroit Tiger third basemen job up for grabs and Fernando Vina set to come off the disabled list either this week or early next, the question around Comerica Park has become what to do with Omar Infante. Infante, who struggled mightily at the plate last season, has been a pleasant surprise this year and has performed better offensively than the man he's filling in for, Vina. John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press suggests the Tigers should try Infante at third base, a position he may be better at defensively than second and where, even without large power numbers, Infante could keep up statistically with other third basemen across the league.
Infante's slugging percentage as Vina's replacement is .529. Only three everyday American League third basemen have slugging percentages that high this season. One is Alex Rodriguez, who at .532 ranks just ahead of what Infante has done as Vina's sub.

Tigers to sign Baldwin?
Over the past two weeks, the Detroit Tigers have signed two new starting pitchers for AAA Toledo, giving them insurance at the major league level if some of their starters, like Nate Cornejo, never break out of their season long slump. The first was former Cincinnati Red Jimmy Haynes who was 0-3 with a 9.60 E.R.A. for the Reds before being released earlier this season. According to the Detroit Free Press, the second is likely to be former Chicago White Sox pitcher, James Baldwin.
Baldwin is 79-72 in a big league career that began in 1995. He made the American League All-Star team in 2000 with Chicago. He has pitched only 21 innings in the big leagues since the start of last season. In two starts with the Mets this season, Baldwin allowed 10 earned runs in six innings.

More Minor League Notes
Tom Gage in the Detroit News this morning had a lot of interesting notes from the Tigers minor league system, including notes about players who are leading, or close to leading, their respective leagues in many different categories. Toledo's Marcus Thames, for example, leads the International League with 14 home runs and 27 runs scored. Franklyn German is second with 11 saves. Nook Logan is a terror on the basepath, leading the league in steals.

In his last 24 games, Tiger OF and top prospect Brent Clevlen has hit .344 for Class A Lakeland while 2B Michael Woods has hit .391 in his past 11 contests.

Rule 5 Picks Impressive
One of the reasons why the Tigers AA team, the Erie SeaWolves, have been able to be successful this season is because of two Rule 5 draft picks from last season, starting pitchers Wilfredo Ledezma and Matt Roney. As Lynn Henning writes in the Detroit News this morning, the two have been so impressive, they may be fighting for jobs in the major league starting rotation as soon as next season.
Ledezma, a left-hander who is 23, has a 5-1 record and 2.68 earned-run average. His secondary numbers — hits, strikeouts, walks, etc. — are excellent: 43 2/3 innings pitched, 39 hits, 43 strikeouts, 15 walks. Roney, 24 and a burly right-hander, hasn’t had Ledezma’s command, but he lost his first game of the season last week and now sits with a 4-1 record and a 3.38 ERA.

Ledezma, in particular, could hit it big in Detroit. He had missed most of 2001 and 2002 because of injuries and needed the kind of seasonlong work he will get in Erie and, perhaps, later this season, at Triple-A Toledo. But by the time spring training convenes next February, Ledezma could easily be in the mix for a job in the Tigers’ rotation.

Dmitri Young
Tiger slugger Dmitri Young wanted to return to the Tigers from his broken leg on May 25th. According to CBS Sportsline, it does not appear he'll be ready to go on that date, the start of a 3-game series against Kansas City.
OF Dmitri Young, on the DL since April 7 as he recovers from a broken right leg, is "very doubtful" for Tuesday's opener of a three-game series in Kansas City. "But that could change," manager Alan Trammel said.
If Young does not play in the KC series, it is likely he will return to the Tigers for a home series against Baltimore starting May 28th.

Olerud Trapped
Saturday's 8-4 victory over Seattle was delayed briefly in the fourth inning when scheduled batter John Olerud had dissapeared. It was speculated that Olerud was in the restroom, but in fact, according to ESPN, he was trapped in the team's video room, and he wasn't alone.
Immediately after Spiezio's homer [in the fourth inning], [Seattle manager Bob] Melvin told plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt that [Rich] Aurilia and John Olerud were trapped in the video room. The door was drilled out and play resumed after a few minutes when Olerud, the next hitter, emerged and teammates giggled in the dugout. "It was funnier at the time," Melvin said.

Knobler on WDFN recap
For those of you without audio who were not able to listen to MLive.com's audio of Danny Knobler on WDFN earlier this week, here's a quick recap:

On Alex Sanchez: "I've turned around on Alex Sanchez. I wasn't really a fan of his before and watching him bunt is really something special right now and you have people who have been in the game for a long time saying that he's the best bunter they've ever seen. especially at Comerica Park where the grass is suited for him and suited for bunting, he's almost becoming unstoppable."

On Omar Infante: "There's a chance that what we're seeing now [from Omar Infante] is the real thing and it's easy to forget sometimes how young these guys are. He's still a young guy and he's developed. I know Alan Trammell gives a lot of credit to Carlos Guillen for helping him out and helping him learn how to be a major leaguer.

On Carlos Pena and Eric Munson: "You should be concerned [about both of them]. They are somewhat young but this was a huge year for both of them. We said it right from spring training, if either of those guys or both of those guys don't perform this year the Tigers are going to have to look elsewhere. The money is not going to be worth it for them...This is a major concern...You can't look to the future if you don't get anything out of those two guys."

For more from Danny, check out the and check back every Monday evening for full audio of his interview with Stoney and Wojo for the latest Danny Knobler Audio at MLive.com's Tiger homepage.

Injury Updates
Two of the Tigers starters coming into the season, Dmitri Young and Fernando Vina, both were set to come off the disabled list this week and rejoin the Tigers. As it turns out, according to the Detroit News, Young is getting close to returning and is even starting to run the bases while Vina's injury is healing slower than expected.
The Tigers initially thought Vina would miss 2-3 weeks, but Trammell said Thursday, “He’s a little bit behind. He needs more time to build the tendon back up. If he doesn’t join us in Kansas City, it’ll be back in Detroit.”
Young, on the other hand, is planning on being activated on Tuesday, in time for the Tigers series against the Royals.

Sometimes the best decisions...
This past off-season, the Tigers were desperate to find a quality shortstop to replace Ramon Santiago and when Miguel Tejada turned them down, the Tigers seemed close to signing Rich Aurilia. As it turned out, thankfully they didn't. Instead the Tigers traded for Carlos Guillen and he's been the backbone of their infield, making spectacular plays in the field and being one of the Tigers most productive offensive players. Aurilia signed with Guillen's old team, the Seattle Mariners, and according to The Tacoma News Tribune, is in danger of being released.
Aurilia, 32, has struggled all season facing unfamiliar pitchers. A career National Leaguer with a .278 average, he's hitting .240 in Seattle and hasn't homered in 121 at-bats as a Mariner.

Worse, for both he and the team, his style of defense at shortstop - which relies more on his positioning than his range - has been undermined because he doesn't know American League hitters.

If they can trade Aurilia, the Mariners are willing to pay some of his $3.5 million contract. If they can't trade him, they're likely to release him.
It's gotten so bad in Seattle that they are considering bringing up both Ramon Santiago and Hiram Bocachica, former Tigers who couldn't make it on a 119-loss team.

The Tigers are 19-19 due in large part to the contribution of Carlos Guillen, and Seattle is struggling in part because they traded him and signed Rich Aurilia instead. Thankfully for the Tigers, Aurilia wanted to stay on the West Coast.

Sanchez Impressive
According to CBS Sportsline, the bunting of Alex Sanchez is becoming a big story across the major leagues. Sanchez has become the one of the best bunters in the league (he has more bunt hits than most whole teams) and many managers, including Detroit's Alan Trammell and Oakland's Ken Macha say he's more than just the best bunter in baseball.
"He's the best I've ever seen," manager Alan Trammell of the Tigers said. "I know Rod Carew and Brett Butler were great, but he ranks up there with any of those guys."
After Sanchez bunted his way on base in last night's 5-1 victory over Oakland, Macha had similar comments.
"What a bunter. He's the best I've ever seen. I don't know what to do unless they let us play another fielder out there."

High Praise for Inge
Last week, Texas Ranger manager Buck Showalter had some very kind words to say about Detroit Tiger pitcher Nate Robertson. This week, Buck's praise is being directed at an offensive-minded Tiger, catcher/outfielder/super utility guy Brandon Inge.

"He must be one of the most valuable players in the game today. He's a catcher who can play center field and anywhere on the infield. I think he has the best release of any catcher in the American League."

BA Likes Espinosa
While not one of their top 20 minor league prospects, Baseball America singled out Tigers minor league outfielder David Espinosa for his strong play in this weeks 'Prospect Hot Sheet'.
Reds first round pick in 2000 looked like a bust entering the year with a .741 OPS in 309 minor league games -- at .361-6-9 he's suddenly among the Eastern League leaders in several categories, and still only 22 years old.

Young, who is expected to get full clearance to begin workouts after a doctors appointment today, may then head to Toledo for a few rehab starts before his May 25th return to the Tigers.
Detroit Tigers manager Alan Trammell said yesterday it is “more than likely” Dmitri Young will make a rehab appearance with the Mud Hens, hopefully this weekend.

ESPN loves Guillen
Shortstop Carlos Guillen has been one of the Tigers best players this season, an accomplishment that has not been overlooked by the national media. ESPN's Jayson Stark singled out Guillen yesterday as one of "five acquisitions" which "no one talked about at the time that have had a major impact on the first six weeks of the season."
We did our homework," says Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski. "And actually, we heard a lot of good things about him. All his injuries were unusual. ... But after five years with an organization where he wasn't always in a position to play, day-in and day-out, I don't think it's surprising that they were interested in making a change." And they're not complaining. Through Thursday, Guillen was hitting .331. He was leading all AL shortstops in on-base percentage (.415). And he handled 123 chances this year before he committed an error.

Injuries Mounting
On both the major league and minor league level, the Detroit Tigers have started to catch the injury bug, with some of the injuries being more serious than others.

Starting 2B Fernando Vina was placed on the 15-day Disabled List last night with a strained hamstring, a body part which kept him on the DL for most of last season. At least for now, the injury does not appear too serious, and Vina is expected to only miss two to three weeks.
"It's the same injury," manager Alan Trammell said. "Nothing, they feel, is anything severe, but he's sore and he needs to rehab it a little bit. He needs to get off of it, basically."
The Tigers recalled Jason Smith, a utility infielder, from Toledo to fill Vina's spot on the roster.

Even Pudge Rodriguez is not safe. During the 15-inning battle with the Oakland A's, Pudge appeared to tweak his hamstring while tagging out an Oakland runner and had to leave the game. While he played yesterday as the DH and the injury does not appear to be serious, Alan Trammell told the Detroit Free Press he wanted to be very careful with the injury.
Trammell said he didn't start Rodriguez at catcher Wednesday "just in case it's more than a cramp." Trammell added, "The last thing we can afford is to lose Pudge for a period of time."
The news is also not good for two of the Tigers youngest pitchers. DetroitTigers.com reports that Rule 5 Draft selection Lino Urdaneta was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL due to increasing shoulder soreness and inflammation. And the Detroit News reported that Rob Henkel, acquired in a trade for Mark Redmond, will likely miss the rest of the season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
After his last outing, Henkel told the Erie Times-News that his shoulder felt so bad "I wish I could have thrown right-handed instead."

USA Today had a feature yesterday about one of the Detroit Tigers most promising minor league prospects, Kyle Sleeth. In it, President Dave Dombrowski has rave reviews for the rookie from Wake Forest, saying that "He's pitching tremendous. He lost his first two games, but he had not pitched in nearly a year." He went on to say that he believes
"(Sleeth) has a chance with his stuff and ability and makeup to move up quickly through the minors, but I don't know how quick that could be. He has an above-average fastball with movement on it, a great pitcher's body and a very mature approach on the mound."

Robertson Earns Rave Reviews
After starting off the season strong then struggling through a few rocky performances, Nate Robertson was back on track during a 5-3 victory Sunday. He stuck out seven while allowing only three hits and one earned run. ESPN.com reports that a talk from his teammates and coaches helped him stay aggressive and go after Ranger batters, saying that "I've found in the past that a good 30-minute conversation can help.". Ranger manager Buck Showalter, had a lot of praise for the young pitcher.
"That's probably as good a game as we've had pitched against us."

Replacement for Bobby?
In this morning's Detroit News, Lynn Henning took a closer look at minor league outfielder David Espinosa. Espinosa, who was acquired in the trade which sent pitcher Brian Moehler to Cincinnati, is having a very nice start to his season, and Henning says he may be the heir apparent to Bobby Higginson in the outfield.
Espinosa is now mashing the ball at Erie and playing honorably in right field, which should be noted as Bobby Higginson’s days dwindle. Espinosa’s numbers last week were a stat analyst’s picnic: .341 batting average, .432 on-base percentage and .610 on the slugging scale.

Espinosa is also 22 years old, which means he is exactly where a budding big-leaguer should be relative to his age and to his soaring numbers.

Not Happy with German?
When Nate Cornejo went on the DL with shoulder problems, many thought the Tigers would call up reliever Franklyn German from Toledo. Instead, Craig Dingman got the call. Despite German's 2-0 record, 0.69 E.R.A., 15 strikeouts in 10 innings, and 8 saves, Manager Alan Trammell is still not happy with what he's seen according to CBS Sportsline.
"We need some help," Trammell said, "and while maybe someone else's numbers are better, it's felt that he [Dingman] can help us right now. (RHP Franklyn) German still hasn't pitched as well as we would like. I look at Dingman as capable of helping out as a couple-of-innings guy, maybe three."

Sleeth the Real Deal?
Many Tiger fans can't wait for former first-round draft pick Kyle Sleeth to work his way through the minor leagues and arrive in Motown. According to ESPN's minor league expert John Sickles, Sleeth could see Detroit as soon as this year if he continues to pitch well.
The Tigers have handled him cautiously so far, starting his '04 season in the Florida State League. He's pitching well so far for Lakeland: 3.19 ERA in five starts, with a 26/6 K/BB ratio in 31 innings. This is more of a tune-up than anything else, getting him used to the pro game, since he signed late last year. If he continues to pitch well in the FSL, which he should, he'll move up to Double-A soon. His performance there will determine whether he gets to the Show or not in '04. At the worst, he should be up sometime before the '05 All-Star break.
Sickles went on to praise Sleeth's "work ethic" as well as his improving slider and changeup.

Last night's 16-15 Tiger loss was incredible. How incredible? It broke numerous Major League Baseball records, and that was just in the 5th inning alone. According to ESPN.com
There were 100 pitches in the fifth inning, which lasted 1 hour, 8 minutes. Detroit scored eight runs in the top half for a 14-4 lead. The Tigers' half of the inning lasted 32 minutes.
The Rangers then responded with 10 runs in their half inning. 28 total batters came to the plate and they combined for 13 hits, 9 walks and 1 hit batter. 7 pitchers were used between the two teams in that inning alone, one short of the major league record.

Young is targetting May 25 as the day for his comeback from a broken leg. The 25th starts a three game series at division rival Kansas City and the game is scheduled to be televised by Fox Sports Detroit.

Urdaneta, who started the season on the disabled list, has returned there after only one rehab start. Urdaneta complained of lingering elbow pain and is back on the DL with "right elbow inflamation."

Cornejo to DL
In a change of plans, instead of heading to the bullpen, Tiger pitcher Nate Cornejo is heading to the 15 Day Disabled List according to DetroitTigers.com. Part of the reason why Cornejo has struggled this season is due to stiffness in his throwing shoulder and rather than make the injury worse, the Tigers have chosen to shut Nate down so he can fully recover. The injury is not serious enough to require surgery, but according to Manager Alan Trammell, Cornejo will miss a significant amount of time.
"We have to put Nate Cornejo on the DL," said Trammell. "He'll probably be out three to four weeks, that's what they're saying. Basically he has some inflammation in his shoulder, nothing major. "
To replace Cornejo, the Tigers have called up reliever Craig Dingman from Toledo.

Sleeth Promoted?
In his last game for the Class A Lakeland Tigers, former first round selection Kyle Sleeth struck out five while allowing no runs and seven hits in 8 and 2/3 innings. In his last three games, Sleeth is 3-0 and has allowed only three runs in 21 innings. Which leads to the question, when will Sleeth be promoted from Class A? According to Baseball America, it may be sooner rather than later.
dave from maryland asks: When will Kyle Sleeth be promoted to AA Erie?

A: Chris Kline: Sleeth will head to Erie when the weather warms up in the northwestern corner of PA (which is usually around August). I'd expect him to be in Double-A by mid-May or early June.

For Now, Cornejo To Pen
While Nate Cornejo will not be starting for the Detroit Tigers anytime soon, he also won't be starting for the Toledo Mud Hens. Instead, according to DetroitTigers.com, he'll be coming out of Detroit's bullpen, giving the Tigers three potential starters in long relief, including Cornejo, Gary Knotts, and Esteban Yan. Manger Alan Trammell beleives this move, and not sending Nate to the minors, is the righrt one.
"Right now we're going to take a step back," said Trammell. "Talking to [pitching coach] Bob [Cluck], and reading some of Nate's comments, I think it tells you his confidence is shaken. I think it's pretty obvious that that's happened.

Update on Dmitri
According to ESPN.com, Detroit Tiger slugger Dmitri Young should be back with the team before the end of the month. As ESPN.com's Alan Schwarz sees it, the success the Tigers have been able to have without Young is somewhat baffling.
Figure this out: The Tigers, no great lineup to begin with, lose perhaps their top offensive force in the season's second game with a nasty broken leg. This leaves Rondell White and Bobby Higginson shifting to DH more often and creates more at-bats for Norton and Monroe than the Tigers had planned. Norton and Monroe post OPSes of .403 and .616, respectively. So what happens? Detroit leads the AL with 152 runs through Monday. Bizarre.

Beltran to Detroit?
The Detroit Tigers signed one All Star outfielder this past off-season (Rondell White) and according to ESPN.com the Tigers are one of many teams that may be interested in another, Kansas City's Carlos Beltran. A true all-around player and one of baseball's brightest young stars, Beltran is hitting .322 with 8 home runs and 20 RBI this season to go along with 7 stolen bases and was named Player of the Month in April. While him coming to the Tigers may be a far away dream for Tigers fans, ESPN thinks the Tigers will be in the running for his services.
By Memorial Day, when the Royals had hoped their brisk summer attendance would begin, the only question may be how long until Baird surrenders to reality and trades Beltran to the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers or even -- gulp -- the Tigers.

Cornejo To Toledo?
While Detroit Tiger manager Alan Trammell has not made any decision on whether to keep struggling pitcher Nate Cornejo in the starting rotation or send him to AAA Toledo to refocus and regroup, Cornejo himself told the Detroit Free Press he's thinking about the possibility of being sent down.
"I wouldn't want to go," Cornejo said, "but it's up to them, not up to me. Yeah, I've been pitching a little on the weak side, but it's not up to me."
