Question: How can I raise money for Nader for President 2004 General Election Committee? Can I collect money for the Nader/Camejo Campaign at a MeetUp or other event?
Answer: All contributions need to be processed and recorded by the campaign to comply with FEC requirements. We ask that volunteers not collect contributions for Nader for President 2004 General Election Committee. Instead, you may hand out contribution forms and ask people to contribute by mailing a check or visiting the website. You can download the contribution form here.
If you would like to host a house party or other event to raise money for the Nader/Camejo Campaign, please contact us at houseparty@votenader.org to help you coordinate the event. You will be given specific instructions on the proper way to collect contributions.
Question: Can I collect contributions for my own expenses, such as making flyers? Can I make Nader/Camejo Campaign merchandise and sell it?
Answer: You cannot collect contributions for activities connected to Nader for President 2004 General Election Committee (this includes money collected from the sale of merchandise). The FEC requires that we report where all of our money comes from, and how we spend it. Any person or group who raises and/or spends money for their own activity in supporting one candidate must not act in coordination with that candidate or campaign. This means that if you raise or spend money on your own, you will not be allowed to communicate with anyone associated with the Nader/Camejo Campaign. In addition, you may be required to report your activity and expenditures to the FEC. Please see the FEC website for more details.
Question: Can I download information and flyers from the website and make copies to distribute?
Answer: If you are a volunteer for the campaign, any money you spend (even on things like making copies) is considered an in-kind contribution to the campaign. You are required to follow all the contribution requirements, and you should fill out an In-kind Contribution Form and submit it to the campaign so your contribution can be recorded.
If you are not associated with the campaign, money you spend is considered an independent expenditure. Material you distribute may require a legal disclaimer indicating who paid for the costs of distribution, and you may be required to report your expenditures to the FEC. Please see the FEC Website for more details.
Question: What do I do if I incur campaign expenses while volunteering?
Answer: If you pay for campaign expenses with your own money, it will be considered a contribution to the Nader for President 2004 General Election Committee and you will not be reimbursed. You must fill out an In-Kind Contribution Form and submit it to the campaign to be recorded. However, if you travel on behalf of the campaign, you may pay your own travel expenses up to $1000 without it being considered a contribution.
If you anticipate expenses in the course of volunteering, reimbursement must be pre-approved in advance by the campaign, otherwise you are making an in-kind contribution and you will not be reimbursed.
Please do not use facilities at your place of work to make copies, send faxes, etc. as this may comprise an illegal business contribution to the campaign.
