TUESDAY'S SHOW

by Eric Hananoki on June 20, 2005 - 11:03pm.

It's Tuesday, and a certain Captain Kangaroo look-alike may be feeling blue due to Senate Blues. Cheer up, Johnny Bolton, because today's Al Franken Show has:

Bill Clinton, 42nd President of the United States. President Clinton recently did humanitarian work in Indonesia, serving as the U.N. representative on tsunami relief. Through the Clinton Foundation, he has helped in the fight against AIDS in the developing world. Clinton's memoir My Life is now in paperback.

Following the 42nd President of the United States may be a tough task, but not if you're Rebecca Traister, staff writer for Salon.com. She just wrote a profile piece about Ed Klein, an actual smear merchant with a new book on Hillary Clinton.

Finally, Josh Micah Marshall, The Hill columnist, and blogger at TalkingPointsMemo.com (much better than that other Talking Points Memo). Josh recently founded TPMCafe.com, a left-leaning group blog that's hosting guest-blogger Rep. Bernie Sanders.

I thought said Al said it was "Dick Cheney" instead of "detainee" that was chained to a bed, naked, laying in his own filth and pulling his own hair out.

This was the best news I had heard in a long time, but then I realized that the subject was a Guantanamo detainee and not our corrupt, thieving Veep.

For a fleeting moment, I had a visual of what justice might look like.

are like a classic 30's gossip couple show, instead of gossip, its politics. Its classy to have everybody come to you all dressed up.

OK I watched the Moyer interview yesterday on Sundance. What seemed awkward on Radio was seemless and just good interviewing on TV. NONE OF THE AWKWARD MOMENTS CAME THROUGH.

Katherine you are BETTER ON TV. FOR SURE. The little emotional noises that make us think there is something wrong, or offending, just arent there on TV mode. ITS VERY INTERESTING. What a GREAT SHOW it is on SUNDANCE...

MAJOR KUDOS TO KATHERINE AND AL. YOU TWO ARE GREAT TOGETHER, Esp ONTV!!

   No problem.

The guy was polite to me. Told him to please ask the Congressman to be more careful, as a Christian I was deeply offended by what he said on the floor yesterday. He said he will tell him, thanks for calling. --> maybe a barrage of calls is making him a bit more polite ? cheesy
(thanks for the number, btw, disgruntled.)

Damn, what's the point of a congressman having a phone number if he's just gonna IGNORE his callers?

Good effort, though.  I hope so some of his constituents call as well.

what's that number again?

I called Congressman Hostetler's office and said "I am a Christian and I am insulted by what he said on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday and I wanted him to relay it to the congressman." He said, "I won't!" and hung up.

I am tired of this arrogance. It is time to get them all out of office.

Watch out what you ask for Mr. Franken.  Old Porter's gonna tell you he's in Iran.

He's my favorite political talk show host.  Al comes in a close second.

My letter:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express an issue with the poll you have posted on your website regarding "terrorist" treatment at Guantanamo Bay.  While I agree that we have a responsibility to do what we can to prevent an attack against the United States, the indefinite holding of prisoners without trial is setting a dangerous precedent for this nation.  The assumption that every single prisoner in Camp X-Ray is a terrorist is tenuous, at best.  If the United States has evidence that these people are terrorists, then it should be no issue for the Department of Justice to try them and imprison them legally or release them.  Since it has not taken steps to prove that prisoners are guilty, your published poll is factually inaccurate.  As a newspaper, it would be nice to know that your questions are not calibrated to produce a desired result.  Hopefully, you hold your interviewers and journalists to a higher standard than you hold your pollsters.

Sincerely,

For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.  Before the Dark Times.  Before the Empire.

Unfortunately, it still makes it easy for him to be attacked because of his stance.  What nobody seems to say is the fact that the Catholic church doesn't require its members to vote a certain way on any issue - whether they're in political office or not.  Though a lot of Catholic lay people try to force us to vote for any "pro-life" polititian without considering any other of their political stances.

What these Catholic polititians need to say is that they are working towards reducing frivalous abortions, while not forcing their religion's beliefs on americans who don't all agree with it.

I am a Catholic who believes that abortion is wrong in all but a few rare cases where the mother's life is significantly threatened.  However, I would rather vote for a pro-choice candidate that tries to take care of single parents and their children, then the recent group of "Pro-Life" conservatives that don't seem to care about the life of the babies and their parents after they're born.  After all, the actual number of abortions performed were smaller (and still shrinking) during Clinton's years then during Bush's years.

Is U.S. hiding Saddam secrets?BRUSSELS, Belgium - Iraqi’s justice minister said Tuesday that U.S. officials are trying to delay interrogations of Saddam Hussein. Justice Minister Abdel Hussein Shandal, in Brussels for an international conference on Iraq, also accused the United States of concealing information about the ousted Iraqi leader. “It seems there are lots of secrets they want to hide,” he told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview. “There should be transparency and there should be frankness, but there are secrets that if revealed, won’t be in the interest of many countries,” he said. “Who was helping Saddam all those years?”

but his seat is safe here.

I totally agree but it is an opportunity to show that if you support the separation of Church and State it would be an excellent opportunity.

My letter:

When so-called political leaders like Durbin take a position politically that is so totally adverse to his professed religion, it creates an impression in more than one voter that he either isn't being true to his religion or that he is taking a political position out of expediency that he doesn't believe in.

I have another take on this. He has chosen the Constitution of the United States over his religion. We are not all Catholics, nor all Jewish, Muslim, Episcopalians, Baptists etc. In the words of Thomas Jefferson:

"I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and State."

To me the free exercise of religion does not include forcing my beliefs, should I be a politician, on those I serve.

How very true. Perhaps it is not that they don't understand, they just feel so 'right' that they do not care how that would be so negative for so many of their fellow americans, whom they claim to love, of different faiths who would become totally disenfranchised. But I guess that is the current 'It's my way or the highway' mentality. I often wonder how they would feel if the shoe was on the other foot?

So many people forget that the seperation was put in, not to protect the government from religion but to protect religion from the hold of government.

She wanted to talk about ``regime change'' in Iraq, setting the stage for the U.S.-led invasion more than a year later.

See, there is the problem...they spelled the "name" wrong!  Go figure.

s and z are just a bottom row below, and a little to the left.  wink

This is a minority view in Chicago.  Durbin is safe.  Very safe here.  I know almost a hundred people who called his office to support him last week.  Granted, he apologized (grrrrr) but his seat is safe here.

For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic.  Before the Dark Times.  Before the Empire.

That President Bush would use his first veto in five years to squash the hopes of millions is virtually unimaginable. That is why I am asking you today to join me in petitioning him to stop obstructing the clear will of the people:

The House has already debated this issue. You have already heard arguments for stem cell research put forth eloquently by Lois Capps and Jim Langevin. This is about saving people's lives, not about partisan politics.

Now I want to share with you just one of the stirring stories the DCCC members shared with us:

"I will fight for SCR expansion for many reasons, but for my step dad, Marty, in particular. He is perfectly healthy, thank goodness ... because he spends his two days off caring for his Alzheimer's stricken mother and for his recently paralyzed son. Both are severe cases that necessitate home care. His son is only 24 years-old, and became a quadriplegic after breaking his neck in a motorcycle accident. It will be a year in July since he's been home. My step brother cannot hug his little daughter, and it is heartbreaking. To think that he could die from something like a bed sore, I just cannot understand how people justify fighting against SCR. To the opposition, I say come look at my step dad's mother, who has to be monitored constantly so she doesn't wander off, who can't remember who she is. Look into the eyes of a woman who cries because she wants to go home to her mother, who's been dead for 50 years. Look at my step brother, a once strapping young man who is now withered, who has to fight to breathe on his own. Look into the eyes of his three year-old little girl, who has to visit "Daddy" because he can't come home to play with her. Look at my step father, who deserves some good news, or at the very least ... some relief from the worry that he could lose either of them at any moment. Look into his eyes and tell him there is no hope, because I cannot. This is for Marty."

-- Tanya Bennitt, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

If that does not persuade you, nothing I can say will either. There are millions of these stories, from every town and city in America. Tell President Bush to remove the "roadblock" and withdraw his veto threat - stem cell research must be funded:

Thank you so much for standing together with me and with those who have lent their voices to this cause.

I guess Mark and Marc covered this today.  Marx got into getting library borrowings and not the security status of people at nukleear facilities.

They may have "impeached" Clinton, but he remained in office.  Bush deserves to be booted out of office.  Even Nixon was more noble--resigning when he was caught in a lie.

Durbin's fair game

Carol Marin ["Abortion foes should look within," column, June 17] quotes the Bible in saying we shouldn't criticize Sen. Dick Durbin for being Catholic and advocating the pro-choice position on abortion. However, what we are talking about is a ''political leader.'' This is someone we expect will tell us the truth, someone who will lead us to the correct solutions to our difficulties.

When so-called political leaders like Durbin take a position politically that is so totally adverse to his professed religion, it creates an impression in more than one voter that he either isn't being true to his religion or that he is taking a political position out of expediency that he doesn't believe in.

Marin's criticism of the American Life League and Cardinal Francis George is therefore sorely misplaced. These voices are merely doing what people do in a democracy: pointing out hypocrisy and inconsistency because these are important characteristics to use in judging whether our public officials are telling us the truth or acting out of cynicism or expediency.

Obviously, they have a lot of proof via video clips that Bush's brain isn't working properly.  That will be their alibi as to why atrocious acts were committed by this administration.  With Regan, he had Alzheimer's to back up his, "I don't remember" responses.

Even if every last charge proved to be true and every last citizen came to believe that the administration concocted a phony case for war in Iraq to get the ball rolling for the PNAC's plan of world domination beginning with control of Middle East oil... like Reagan, Bush would get away with it because "he didn't know (better)."

For anyone who hasn't heard of them...they are a group of people with all DIFFERENT faiths who are taking on the bush/neo-con religious zealots on many issues. They are the true faithful who understand what our country was REALLY founded upon....religious tolerance and not having it crammed down our throats like some of the evangelicals are trying to do to us.

Here's what they had to say on Social Security:

Why is FaithfulAmerica part of this effort? Because Social Security is a covenant, and we believe that covenants, when they deal with the livelihoods of our brothers and sisters, can be sacred.. The consequences of privatization could adversely affect millions of people, and this is simply unacceptable. Privatization of Social Security would mount a $2 trillion debt in the first 10 years, $6 trillion after 20 years, and $15 trillion over the next 40 years. That would surely result in cuts in critical programs for children, the elderly and those without insurance. Finally, a little known feature referred to as "clawback" would simply... well, watch the movie and you'll see. Ask youselves, dothe decisions we make empower us or impoverish us? Do our policies reflect the highest of who we are, or do they punish those most in need? These are spiritual matters - moral issues - and that is why we need you to speak up! Together, we can preserve the covenant. Because without Social Security, more than 50 percent of women and 40 percent of men over the age of 65 would live in poverty. Today, Social Security survivor benefits provide support for 4.5 million children. Privatization is the surest way to destroy Social Security. Speaking up is the surest way to preserve it! Watch the movie - then take action!

Blessings to you for all you do on behalf of others, Vince Isner and Your FaithfulAmerica.org Team
