This week, a blast from the past: A very special re-broadcast of Steve's talk with recording artist, engineer and inventor of the solid body electric guitar Les Paul.  A living legend at 91 years old, Les Paul has been playing country, jazz, experimental pop, rock and blues music and experimenting with music and recording equipment for over 70 years.  He has played live and collaborated on records with everyone from his wife Mary Ford to Louis Armstrong and Charlie Christian to Eric Clapton and Sam Cooke.

News: See Steve at Farm Aid’s annual benefit concert, which is taking place in Camden, NJ on Saturday, September 30th. In October: Steve will join Moby and Chuck D in Acting Up: Music Activism 2006, a panel hosted by the CMJ Music Marathon, an annual festival, drawing over 10,000 professionals from all sectors of the music business, who converge on New York to discover the best new music and debate today’s music business challenges. The panel will discuss the ups and downs of fighting for causes and what happens when musicians turn political.

nick tosches This week on The Steve Earle Show brought to you by New West Records, Steve talks to one of his all-time favorite authors, Nick Tosches.  Nick Tosches was born (1949) in Newark, New Jersey, and raised by wolves from the other side. Through nepotism he became a barroom porter at the age of fourteen. Casting this career to the wind in his quest for creative fulfillment, he became a paste-up artist for the Lovable Underwear Company in New York City. On January 12, 1972, he went to lunch and never came back, drifting south to Florida, where, among other things, he worked as a snake-hunter for the Miami Serpentarium. After being bit on the shin one morning, he decided to forsake all further employmnet, and thus became a writer of poetry and prose.  Playlist:
