  Background and Distinctions
The Cincinnati Post was first established in 1881 as the Penny Paper and purchased that same year by James Scripps. Two years later his brother E. W. Scripps joined him and changed its name to the Penny Post. It became The Evening Post in 1890. During the 1950s, The Evening Post purchased the Times-Star and operated as The Cincinnati Post and Times-Star until 1974, when Times-Star disappeared from the masthead. From its founding it has been a champion of civic reform. The Post advocated the establishment of a city-manager form of government, promoted major reforms to improve public education and has been a leader in redevelopment of the city's downtown and riverfront. In 1979 The Post entered into a joint operating agreement with The Cincinnati Enquirer. Today it is still firmly grounded in Greater Cincinnati, serving more than 35,000 readers five afternoons each week, plus Saturday mornings. The Cincinnati Post and The Kentucky Post - it's northern Kentucky edition - are often cited as the best in their circulation class by such organizations as the Associated Press, the Kentucky Press Association, and the Society of Professional Journalists.
