Pilarczyk called to testify
Abuse claims may be before a grand jury

By Kimball Perry, Post staff reporter

Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk was scheduled to testify before a Hamilton County today, likely to address questions surrounding allegations that church workers sexually abused children.

''He was subpoenaed. I don't know what he's going to be asked,'' Archdiocese spokesman Dan Andriacco confirmed today.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Mike Allen, citing the required secrecy of grand jury proceedings, refused comment.

Archbishop Pilarczyk in March announced at a press conference that sex scandals involving priests and the Catholic church around the U.S. weren't happening in the Cincinnati Archdiocese.

But he admitted as many as five employees -- including at least one priest -- accused of sexually exploiting children in the past were still working for the Archdiocese.

As many as 20 employees in the 19-county archdiocese, Archbishop Pilarczyk noted at the time, ha d abused children.

The archbishop will be accompanied to the grand jury to give testimony by Archdiocese Chancellor Father Christopher Armstrong, Andriacco said.

Father Armstrong isn't an attorney, but he is the archdiocese's ''chief canon lawyer,'' its expert on church law.

After Allen announced his office would investigate, the archdiocese turned over at least five boxes full of documents prosecutors requested.
