Back in Black! Or rather, back OUT black!

Just a quick blog post to update you on an issue near and dear to the hearts of some people.  Well, at least the 1300 or so people so far who have contacted me about this issue.

Background

In Vista, we are really trying to reduce the amount of high contrast visual noise in the UI to make it more comfortable for daily use. Part of that is make the taskbar darker, and another aspect is making the maximized windows match the taskbar by tinting toward black also.  The black taskbar and black titlebar produce a kind of letter-boxed effect, drawing your eyes toward the contents.  We think it works pretty well.  What we do is mix black in with the selected window color.  If you look closely, you can see that your taskbar and maximized titlebars all have some of your window color mixed in.

The Complaints

Now, we have had a number of complaints from users on this one.  It seems that people who bother to change their window color using the cool new Appearance control panel are not happy when their red or blue windows turn black.  Of course, for any change we make there are a whole bunch of people who hate it.  With 300 million users, even 1/10th of 1% of people don't like something, and only 1% of those REALLY don't like it, that is still thousands of people who will email us daily, blog about it, tell their friends, etc.  The trick of working in Windows is to have a thick skin while still remaining sensitive to potentially serious issues.

For this issue, we talked about it internally for quite a while.  Were people just reacting to the change?  Would they get used to it over time and even grow to appreciate it?  Or would it be one of those little annoying things that bugs people a little bit every day?  We even considered whether or not this should be a choice for the user.  Was it worth adding more UI to the system?  And of course as time went on, the ability to make any change at all was going down by the day.

The Fix

In the end, we decided that we like the black and think it is the right thing to do, but we want to respect the user's color choice for users who bother to make a change.  So - starting in today's build, we have significantly backed off the amount of black that is mixed in with the user's color for maximized windows.  This is not particularly noticeable with the default color, but with the more intense colors like Red and Orange, you will appreciate the difference.

So - cheers for everyone who didn't like the black windows!  And for those who want the darkness, just change your window color to something more black.

Very good step in the right direction. I was one of the people hat hated the black, espacially in IE7. It looked ok on the normal borders though. I'm very pleased to hear that it's changed. But a screenshot would be nice :)

A good start, I just hope theres a registry edit for this because I want transparency when I maximise a window.

Anywho, screenshot comparison please!

I'd love to see a screenshot comparison as well.

However, what a bunch of whiny brats you people are (I am referring to the complainers)...

The letterbox effect makes perfect visual and UI sense.

Sounds great, thanks for listening to the users. I look forward to seeing your tweaks.

Is there a chance that the amount of black tint could be adjusted via the registry, you would not then require any additional UI, you could then have the setting in TweakUI for Vista.

This just goes to show that the Shell team is not just using these forums as a PR mechanism- they are actually making positive changes based on the feedback here. Thanks, Shell team!

Hm... I hope it hasn't changed too much. I liked the non-transparent black borders.

Good move, but it does not solve the problem of telling which window is active.

Maximized windows are not always active. Without a strong indication that the window does not have focus, users will start typing, under the mistaken impression that the maximized window is active. This will lead to confusion and frustration.

Possible solution: if you already have the technology to mix in black, allow users to mix in another choice of color instead to the active window. (This should apply, regardless of the window's size or position.)

Im surprised you guys didn't follow the registry key suggestions, as that would have been much easier for everyone in my opinion. Not that I'm one to complain, however.

Does the taskbar also change color to the same effect as the border of a maximised window?

Btw, I've got it on my machine at work (installed todays build on it (sorry guys, one of the perqs of working on vista)) - it's pretty subtle, but I like it.

I actually love what happens with blue - you get this very subtle blue overtone on the black - it's almost imperceptable but it's there.

So how about redesigning the "add a font" dialog while your add it or are we going to have to wait until 2010 to get rid of something from 1993?

Need a hint:

I figure changing the title bar settings is a much smaller task to do very late in the development cycle compared to changing an Add Font dialog.

The big issue for me is all the blue green / aquamarine all over the interface...as a photographer I find all the colors distracting. I hope that Vista SP1 will include an option to change the color scheme.

Also, when will we see Camera RAW, DNG support throughout the shell? I thought that RAW image format would be a first class citizen in Vista.

I have to agree with Claudio, I really dont like "blue green / aquamarine" colours all over the shell, i think they are nasty colours. But then thats my personal taste.

Sorry to add to the derail, but I would love to see a more neutral color scheme as well.

Er, does this still mean the sidebar and taskbar are going to change color (from semi-transparent background to solid color) whenever a window is maximized, in a very distracting and inconsistent manner?

Disappointing.  I really don't understand why you guys can't make a registry key for this sort of thing.  Hopefully you'll at least make it accessible so WindowBlinds or some other 3d party can give the large percentage of your customers what they want.

Glad people like it.  I really will post screenshots soon- just too busy.  To answer some questions:

- if you are using subtle colors like the default, you will not notice much difference.  So those who liked the black, don't worry.

-  this does not affect active vs. inactive windows, sidebar, or taskbar.  These are all the same

I believe this should be in the EDW/RC2 build that is coming out soon.

Im one of those people, how dislike black titiles in Vista. But I dont understand. Do you remember build 5342? Titiles there were beautiful! Its wasnt black, it wasnt white. Its not question of color, its question of texture!

I dont understand why you cant back this (5342) texture and close disscusion!

I also agree with Claudio. I think the blue greenish look is a step back from the folder-specific colors we were seeing before. It used to help the user distinguish different windows easier, especially in Flip3D.

To be honest, I never had a problem with it, in fact, I didn't see a substantial difference when you changed it in build 5342. I personally was hoping it would adapt the color of the Desktop wallpaper when maximized but blurred out.
