20. Johan Djourou

Johan is another highly-rated youngster who saw his stock soar last season. The 18-year-old defender started the campaign as a fringe player at Highbury but ended it as a member of Switzerland's World Cup squad.

The teenager took his chance in all three domestic competitions after a raft of injuries depleted Arsenal's options at the back. Johan's pace, reading of the game and calmness in possession caught the eye. His versatility was also evident as he slotted in at centre back and both full-back positions.

Johan's progress at club level earned him a call up to the Swiss national side early in 2006. He did enough to earn a place in Switzerland's World Cup squad and made three appearances in Germany, contributing to clean sheets against France, South Korea and Ukraine.

With Sol Campbell no longer at the Club and Senderos ruled out until October, Johan is expected to get further chances to impress in the new season.

My Year

September

With injuries to defenders Philippe Senderos and Gael Clichy, Johan made the most of his opportunities to shine in September. He played a full 90 minutes against Middlesbrough, Hamburg, Manchester United and Sheffield United, keeping clean sheets in the latter two fixtures. He then missed the visit of Porto but ended the month as a late substitute in the 2-1 win over Charlton.

August

A solid start to the season by the Swiss defender who started the win at Alkmaar, both legs of the Dinamo Zagreb tie plus the Premiership games against Aston Villa and Manchester City. Athletic, strong in the tackle and improving all the time, Johan’s partnership with Kolo Toure at the heart of the defence is blossoming well.

June

Johan was one of a trio of Arsenal teenagers at this summer’s world Cup and despite having little international experience prior to this summer’s World Cup, the defender made three appearances. He started the second round clash with Ukraine and partnered club-mate Philippe Senderos in the closing stages of the game against France.

March

Johan was an unused substitute in five of Arsenal’s fixtures during March but did play the entire 90 minutes of a ‘behind-closed-doors’ friendly against Brighton at the training ground.

February

Johan started the first three games of the month against West Ham, Birmingham and Bolton before the return from international duty of Kolo Toure relegated the Swiss defender to the substitutes’ bench for the remainder of February.

January

Johan began the month by helping the reserves to a win over Ipswich before starting for the first team against Cardiff, Wigan, Middlesbrough (his first Premiership start) and Bolton.

November

Swiss defender Johan made one appearance in November, helping the Gunners keep a clean sheet in the Carling Cup win over Reading.
