Haze Update

NEWS RELEASE NO: 41/2006

DATE OF ISSUE: 15 OCT 2006

The prevailing winds remain southeasterly today. The winds weakened late last night bringing in less smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan to Singapore and improved the haze situation. However, the winds strengthened again by late morning today bringing in more smoke haze from Kalimantan. This has caused the 3-h PSI to rise into the 90s range.

The prevailing winds are expected to remain southeasterly for the rest of today and tomorrow.

The latest satellite picture detected 54 hotspots in Sumatra and 297 hotspots in Kalimantan. Many areas in Kalimantan were obscured by dense smoke haze.

The 24-hr PSI at 4 pm was 93 and the 3-hr PSI at 4pm was 98. As the smoke haze situation is likely to deteriorate, the public is advised to refer to NEA's website (www.nea.gov.sg/psi) for the hourly updates of 3-hr PSI. The relevant health advisory depending on the severity of the haze situation is also available on NEA's website.

NEA will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep the public informed through its website and the  media.
