HK parade the Asian Games qualifying trophy

Hong Kong win Asian Games spot

4 FEBRUARY 2006

Hong Kong beat Malaysia 50-14 in the final of the Asian Games Qualification Tournament at the Hong Kong Football Club to secure the last remaining place in the Sevens Competition at the 15th Asian Games in Doha in December 2006.

With a squad comprised entirely of Asian Games eligible players, all of whom were born in Hong Kong, the HKRFU VII finished the day undefeated, beating Singapore, Kazakhstan and Malaysia in the opening pool round and Malaysia again in the Asian Games Qualification Tournament Final to advance to Doha.

"We have been training hard for the competition over Chinese New Year and I am pleased that we played to the level we aspired to today," said HK captain Alex Gibbs.

" The most exciting thing about today's result is that we have uncovered some young homegrown talent that has the potential to be the core of future Hong Kong sides for the next ten years "

Sevens rugby's inclusion in the Asian Games further confirms the rapid emergence of Rugby Sevens, which allows nations from all continents to be truly competitive with the traditional rugby nations.

Sevens is a core sport of the Commonwealth Games and is the second-most sought after ticket for the 2006 Games in Melbourne in March. The final Sevens session at the Commonwealth Games is sold out and will be played in front of a world record crowd of over 55,000.
