Sega Genesis ~ Barney's Hide and Seek Review

"Barney is a dinosaur from our imagination,

he's now made us all a game for him and us to play in,

Barney walks and talks and jumps, he's the real sensation,

But the thing we wanna know, can we all believe him?

Take Barney on a hide and seek adventure with his 5 little friends through 4 magical levels of joyous fun. Pushing A, B or C on the pad will all do the same thing depending on where Barney is to make it easy for the kiddies. In clear space Barney can blow a kiss into the air, to spread his love. Upon finding a friend, Barney will give them a big hug and without hesitation, he will remind all his young viewers "Remember, I love you!"  With all the cheerful animals and objects around, Barney can spread his magical dust to bring your imagination to life! Giving a bale of hay to a cow, watering a plant, make a scarecrow move his arms, or even get a racoon to throw some trash into the bin! Safety is of upmost importance to Barney, he won't let you venture into dangerous territory, unless it is safe! So many things to play with and so much to learn! Super Deduper!

The young ones will be marvelled by the colourful graphics like a vibrantly coloured in colouring book with dazzling animations throughout. A pat on the back Barney!

Sound and Music

Your typical children's tune playing in the background that both kids and parents can sing along with. It has a midi quality about it, so it's quite good.

Barney's yaps his mouth off wherever he goes. He'll say "I see a friend!", "I see a present!" to ruin any element of surprise. The speech quality is quite poor, like when he is meant to say "Look, it's a fish!", it'll sound more like "Look, it's a bitch!" How dare you Barney!

Game Design

This game is targeted at under 7 year olds. There really isn't any challenge at all apart from finding all 5 friends and gifts that aren't very well hidden. The levels are large and expansive worlds for the little ones. Barney can't be killed, and even if you don't find any friends or presents, you still take a stupendous trip to the next level. Remember, you can also go right to left. Nice one Barney!

2.5 out of 5

Only 4 levels? C'mon Barney! Little kids may be nave but they aren't that stupid. 5-7 year olds will be able to find all your little friends and presents in under half an hour!

For: great for under 5 year olds, lots of super duper things to play and learn about, colourful, sing along tunes.

Against: pretty much unplayable for over 7 year olds, only 4 levels, Barney's hugs are repetitive and annoying, finding friends and presents is too easy, Barney is big and dumb.

"I love you, you love me,

Play my Hide and Seek with your family,

With a great big hug and a kiss on your TV,

Can you say you love my game?"

As usual with games like this, hardly any of the Genesis power is utilised. Shame on you Barney!

Kids tend to take things literally.

No Barney! You can't fly on a balloon!

No! You can't float on a cloud!

That can be dangerous.

Is Barney gay?

Now that is really dangerous!

I love you, you love me um, no I don't.
