Base4 and the 15 minute challenge: October 3 at 10:37 p.m.

The last version of Base4 shipped with an early version of the SchemaBuilder/Browser embedded website, the new version coming with version 2.1 is the real deal.

In fact it is so good I gave myself a challenge:

Get Base4 installed, configured and running, and then create, register and use a non trivial schema, and all in less than 15 minutes.

The challenge, was really no challenge. And to prove it, I made this video, shot in realtime , which runs for a poultry 13:22!

Okay okay, so it wasn't shot in real time, you will probably notice some bad editing but that is because I kept tripping over my tongue, not because I have edited it to appear faster. You'll just have to take my word for that!

The video demonstrates some of the new features of Base4, including the SchemaGuesser which can guess a schema from an existing database for you, within seconds (and that is not an exaggeration).

If you haven't got time for the video, the next best thing is some screenshots, it's as easy as 1,2,3.

1) Click "Guess Types"

2) Enter a Database name (and if necessary a table filter), and click sync.

3) And Base4 guesses the types for you.

Base4 can work out Types, Properties and even more complicated relationships like OneToMany and ManyToMany if your database has foreign keys. If the guessed schema is not right, no problem you can easily edit it.

Once you are happy with your schema you simply register, and then download the generated DLL and you can start coding.

Remember you can see all this in the video!

I think this new functionality along with the existing ability to create new types and schemas on the fly makes Base4 a compelling application. I hope you agree.

Base4.NET version 2.1 will be released in a few days.
