Congress Not Representative of America

As a result of my comparison of the percentage of American people who consider themselves libertarian to media coverage and congressional election results, my inbox has been filled with questions and supporting documentation. Richard Newell sent the following:

Here, side-by-side are your “Nolan chart” (house members, from Logan Ferree), and one captured from http://www.okcupid.com/politics, where the Kerry and Bush voters are plotted in blue and red. (The votes for “other” are not shown.) I rotated it to the usual rombus orientation so the charts match.

I believe it supports the contentions made by you and David Boaz, that maybe 20% of the population is more libertarian than “left” or “right”, and that the Congress, especially the Republicans, are out of touch with the people. The Republican congresscritters are all located in a fairly unpopulated (and unsavory) portion of the chart, whereas the people who voted for Bush would actually prefer more economic liberty.

While the chart (the one on the right) omits non-R&D voters, the questions are not the same, and the site from which it comes seems to have almost twice as many Democrats as Republicans taking the survey, it provides an interesting general view of how far Congress is out of line with the American public. Note the contrast in the authoritarian quadrants of the two charts, as well as in the libertarian quadrants.

Logan Ferree provided some helpful information about how he scored Congressmen on the Nolan Chart.

The Fiscal/Trade Scorecard is here: http://freedomdemocrats.org/HouseScorecard01Economic and the Social/Defense Scorecard is here: http://freedomdemocrats.org/HouseScorecard01Social I used the score for each axis to place Congressmen on the Nolan Chart. You can download the text document files and they have the information on all of the votes. I have them in two separate text files right now, placing all thirty votes together would make a pretty big file. Let me know if I can help out in any other way, I should be having a Senate Scorecard soon (Last year’s can be found on the website: http://freedomdemocrats.org/node/234). If you are interested at all in scorecards, you might want to look at other older work. I’ve done a scorecard based on the 10 key votes identified by action alerts sent out by the Liberty Committee (Ron Paul’s group) last year: http://freedomdemocrats.org/node/384 Thanks for the interest and I’ll try to answer any questions you have.

I combined his two sets of data to provide some idea of how one might index current members of Congress (based on their voting patterns). While I suspect that there would be some reversals if the Democrats had more political power right now, this Liberty Index is pretty interesting, nonetheless. Ferree has more useful data here.

  1. Wow, my rep (Sessions) is about as low down as I would expect.

    Comment by Nigel Watt — 2006-02-03 @ 6:10 pm

  2. Wow! Only 8 R’s in the top 168. The rest are below the “40% Libertarian” level.

    Comment by Richard Newell — 2006-02-03 @ 6:32 pm

  3. It’s also a sad sign of the times that the Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert, is sitting down there at zero-zero, along with the most extreme [totalitarian] 0.1% of the public.

    Comment by Richard Newell — 2006-02-03 @ 7:51 pm

  4. Posted about this on the Maher forums…
    http://boards.billmaher.com/showthread.php?t=42289

There’s like 3 other libertarians that I know of on there that post fairly regularly.

    Comment by Rob D. — 2006-02-03 @ 8:38 pm

  5. Also a bad sign that the new House Majority Leader is pretty low on the scale. (Is his name pronounced Boner? Bart might get his wish after all.)

    Comment by Nigel Watt — 2006-02-03 @ 9:56 pm

  6. Yeah, the Louisiana folks are fairly low. Funny thing is that I’ve ended up on an email list for Bobby Jindahl and he talk a very libertarian game in his emails, but it’s pretty obvious his voting record says something rather different. (Well, at least he voted down the broadcast flag.) *sigh*

    Comment by Lenny Zimmermann — 2006-02-03 @ 11:54 pm

  7. This should prove what I’ve been saying for years: Republicans are the true enemies of liberty in the US. Since the rules are stacked against 3rd parties, I think the best bet is for libertarians to infiltrate the Democratic Party and try to sway them in a more libertarian direction. This will also help to weaken the Republican Party because many libertarians ignorantly support Republicans because they’re deluded into thinking that they support smaller government.

  8. Data and especially pictures like this could be dynamite if the work that went into assembling them is unassailable. The problem is it’s a little less than perfect because of some reasons already given.

    Comment by DaveT — 2006-02-04 @ 12:31 am

  9. Other Nolan charts of interest:

http://www.lpboulder.org/archives/bcf/2004/photos.html (third from top) Boulder (Colorado) Creek Festival 2004 (there are no elected Republicans from Boulder County other than the two University of Colorado Regents At Large elected statewide)

http://lpcolorado.blogs.com/photos/lp_photos/mikeandrand.html Denver Capitol Hill People’s Fair (another Democratic stronghold)

http://www.lpcolorado.org/photos/2005applefest/2005applefest-01.htm from a Colorado small town fair (there used to be other pictures at lpcolorado.org showing results skewing even more libertarian from other Colorado small town fairs but I couldn’t find them since the site redesign)

While these “World’s Smallest Political Quiz” samples are somewhat self-determining and non-scientific, there is obviously an opportunity for politics that better represents the population, if only we can seize it.

Farree’s data is enlightening in showing the degree of socialism of both parties.

    Comment by Daniel Ong — 2006-02-04 @ 2:47 am

  10. Interesting post. I do agree that if the Dems were in power the chart would be different, but I don’t think it would be so different that the Republicans would be more libertarian than the Dems.

And as it was noted earlier, it’s pretty damn scary that the Speaker of the House is at 0 on both scales.

Guy sounds like a Totalitarian Communist.

Comment by The Disenfranchised Voter — 2006-02-04 @ 8:21 am

  11. I posted the WSPQ on a board once and a few people complained loudly that it’s heavily biased against conservatives because of the wording of the questions. I tend to agree. In being small, it sacrifices accuracy. I hate deceiving people because I feel like it’s not a good long term strategy.

    Comment by DaveT — 2006-02-04 @ 1:04 pm

  12. Hastert scored a zero because non-votes are counted as votes against the position of the scorecard, & the Speaker of the House traditionally skips most votes. Although, the few votes he did participate in were opposed to the scorecard anyway.

    Comment by b-psycho — 2006-02-04 @ 2:43 pm

  13. [In response to DaveT in comment #11]

While bias may be a valid concern regarding the WSPQ (10 questions), note that the two charts at the start of this thread were from much longer, and I believe, less biased surveys (approx. 30 questions or votes).

    Comment by Richard Newell — 2006-02-05 @ 12:31 am

  14. anyone know what happened to the longer version of WSPQ that used to be up there? I like that better as it gave a more accurate score, but I can’t find it anywere now.

  15. Counted by fourths:

    Democrats

    Top 1/4 105/109
    Next 1/4 74/109
    Next 1/4 20/109
    Bottom 1/4 3/109

A surprising and very interesting result. So come join us, libertarians.

  16. Come on, people. This was compiled by a Democratic web site with the explicit purpose of making Democrats appear to be more libertarian. The scorecard itself assumes being anti-Iraq-war and pro-choice (and so on) are libertarian positions, which is a pretty big leap (and the reason why so many people have fled the Libertarian party for the GOP over the past several years).

And perhaps worst of all, the scorecard left off votes on tax cuts. They SAY it is because just because you vote for tax cuts doesn’t mean you’re libertarian because you could vote for spending incresases, which in the long run make the tax cuts worse, but that should be reflected by having a scorecard that takes those other votes into effect: it seems to me these Democrats left off the tax cut votes because, as they say, they want to make Democrats look more like libertarians, and, as they say, the tax cut votes favor Republicans.

    I reject the entire dataset.

    Comment by pudge — 2006-02-20 @ 11:41 am

  17. This is not surprising at all. The GOP has experienced a large shift in the last decade. Its new base is the religious right, which is the most anti-libertarian segment of significance in our current political environment. They oppose individual liberty on a long list of issues: contaception, fertilization technology, research cloning, gay marriage, gay sex, separation of church and state, the flag burning amendment, etc. It’s not just abortion where they want the state to control what we do.

    Comment by E Allen — 2006-02-22 @ 4:27 pm

  18. This listing is absolutely not correct. Barbara Lee and Maurice Hinchey more libertarian than John Shadegg and John Boehner? Sherwood Boehlert more libertarian than Zach Wamp? Give me a break.

    Comment by Aaron — 2006-02-25 @ 9:54 pm

  19. How can you be a libertarian and not be pro-choice?
