The Romney Building Renovation
Lansing, Michigan

Hobbs + Black Architects produced a  feasibility study for the adaptive reuse of the 75 year old Hotel Olds in downtown Lansing for a new state office building.  The important building presented many challenges including an active and restrictive construction site, low floor to floor heights (ten feet) and obsolete mechanical, electrical and building service systems.  The successful outcome of the study led to the commission to renovate the building.

In addition to the general cleaning and repairing of the existing masonry, a one-story limestone “base” and entry plaza were added as well as a dramatic 10-story atrium that begins at the fourth floor.  Complete new mechanical and security systems and six new elevators and shafts were installed within the existing building frame.

The new building configuration and exterior treatment complements the adjacent state capital complex and preserves a fine building for the city of Lansing.
