3.27.06 New Membership Development Director Onboard
After an extensive, nationwide search, Bikes Belong is pleased to welcome Scott Bowen as our membership development director. Scott hails from Santa Rosa, California, and moved to Colorado to begin work at Bikes Belong’s headquarters March 13. His wife, Nika, and their two young daughters will follow shortly.
Scott’s primary goal is to maintain our membership base and recruit new supporters. He is also seeking strategic partnerships outside the bike industry. In particular, he has strong connections and knowledge in the health care world, having worked in the pharmaceutical industry for eight years and in other medical positions for four years before that.
Scott began his bicycling career as a BMXer when he was six. He has been an avid cyclist ever since, working at two bike shops in high school and racing road and mountain bikes for 14 years.
“Scott has already demonstrated outstanding initiative and enthusiasm to help Bikes Belong grow financially so we can put more people on bicycles more often,” said Bikes Belong’s executive director Tim Blumenthal. “We are happy to have him on our team.”
Scott is available to answer your membership questions. You can reach him at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 303/449-4893.
3.10.06 – Safe Routes to School National Partnership Rolling Forward
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership has grown to more than 160 non-profit organizations, government agencies, and businesses working to advance the Safe Routes to School (SR2S) national movement. New members include the American Heart Association, the National PTA, and the American Public Health Association.
Bikes Belong provided initial funding for the partnership in August 2005 and continues as its primary sponsor.
Recent partnership accomplishments include:
Now is the time for advocates in each state to start working with their department of transportation to help ensure that the $612 million earmarked for the federal program is put to the best possible use. The partnership’s goal is to provide policy input and guidance to make this possible.
- At the National Bike Summit, partnership coordinator Deb Hubsmith spoke about SR2S and also helped train the Safe Routes to School State Coordinators recently hired by each state department of transportation.
- The partnership created a primer called States Take Action, which explains how to work proactively with state DOTs to establish the best possible state SR2S programs.
- The partnership is setting up “teleseminars” for state advocates to encourage more collaborative work with state DOTs on program development.

3.08.06 – National Bike Summit Builds on Past Accomplishments
A record 375 advocates, bicycle industry leaders, retailers, and transportation and health officials gathered in Washington, D.C., March 1-3 for the sixth annual National Bike Summit, organized by the League of American Bicyclists. Bikes Belong was the title sponsor.
Building on momentum from past successes, attendees brought a high level of energy and enthusiasm to the event. Previous years’ summits helped gain $4.5 billion for bicycling and walking in the federal transportation law passed last August. The 2006 conference focused on how to make sure this money is spent effectively on bicycle projects throughout the country.
Two themes of the summit were creating bicycle-friendly communities and implementing Safe Routes to School programs. The highlight was a coordinated lobbying day on Capitol Hill, where attendees met with more than 350 members of Congress to push for additional federal support for bicycle facilities and programs.
“The level of professionalism in our movement keeps improving,” said Bikes Belong executive director Tim Blumenthal. “We are getting better at making our case, and this is helping us gain respect on Capitol Hill.”
2.14.06 – Bikes Belong Funding Thunderhead and Complete Streets
Bikes Belong recently pledged support of two national bicycle advocacy efforts: Thunderhead Alliance and the National Complete Streets Campaign.
Thunderhead Alliance is the national coalition of bicycle and pedestrian advocacy groups. Bikes Belong is providing $10,000 in cash support for their Benchmarking Project, a data collection and analysis effort that is designed to measure the success of bicycling programs across the United States.
The National Complete Streets Campaign is working to create “Complete Streets” that provide safe and appealing options for bicycling and walking. Bikes Belong is making a $15,000 cash contribution to this campaign to match support provided by the American Association of Retired Persons and the American Society of Landscape Architects. Our contribution will help this initiative make our communities better for bicycling and walking and build powerful connections between bicycle groups and other organizations.
