Nut oil Jojoba a better fuel than diesel: Research

Nicosia, Mar.6 (ANI): In an effort to find an alternative and less polluting fuel, scientists in Cairo have tested Jojoba, the nut oil widely used in shampoos, beauty creams and cosmetics, which they say is even better than diesel.

Researchers at the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain and Cairo's Helwan University mixed raw jojoba oil with a dash of methanol and a catalyst.

According to a paper on Renewable Energy published in The Telegraph, they compared its performance with that of diesel.

The jojoba matched diesel for torque and power over engine speeds between 1,000 and 2,000 revolutions per minute and the engine ran more quietly.

Jojoba contains less carbon than fossil fuels, reducing carbon-dioxide pollution linked to climate change. Unlike diesel, it has no sulphur, so the exhaust is free of harmful sulphur oxides.

Jojoba also ignites at a higher temperature than diesel, so it is less likely to blow up while being stored or transported.

Growing on plants up to 15ft high and 150 years old, jojoba is just the latest plant oil, after rapeseed, sunflower and soybean oil, to be tested successfully as a renewable alternative to diesel. (ANI)
