NAACP to hold election Sunday

The local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will hold its election from noon until 4 p.m. Sunday.

Long-time president Jerry Ann Hamilton, who was first elected to office in 1998, faces Tony Fikes, who currently serves as first vice president.

'I want to continue the work that we have done over the years. We have come a long way," Hamilton said today. "We have made a huge impact in the community and we want that to continue."

Fikes said his platform focuses on inclusion. "We can accomplish a lot more if we use all the talents of those who are part of the branch," Fikes said today.

Voting will take place at the group's headquarters at 2745 N. Martin Luther King Dr.

Adrial White family to start letter drive

Racine - Less than a week after a jury convicted Adrial White of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of attempted homicide in the shooting death of a Racine man and the wounding of another, White's family says the case is far from over.

The family is gathering signatures and letters of support to present to Judge Christopher Constantine, Edwina White, Adrial White's sister, said today.

The family hopes the signatures and community support will affect White's sentencing in January. The family plans to appeal the conviction. Edwina White said the family intends to begin their campaign Monday.

"If you're not a black male in Racine, you can't understand," Edwina White said.

A jury on Monday rejected the defense's claim of self-defense. Prosecution contended that lethal force was excessive.

White, 29, could face life in prison.

Parking lot rage incident reported

Glendale police are investigating a report of parking lot rage today after one woman bumped her car into a pedestrian who refused to move out of a parking stall outside Boston Store at Bayshore Town Center.

Glendale Police spokesman Joel Dhein said the pedestrian was saving the stall for a friend who had yet to arrive at the spot when another driver approached to pull in. The driver asked her to move, but she refused, prompting a standoff that ended when the driver nudged the pedestrian with her car.

Police have yet to make contact with the driver to hear her version of the story, Dhein said, but at this point charges appear unlikely.

"It's a case of poor judgment on both sides," he said.

Rollover crash injures five

An early morning rollover crash in Washington County sent five people to area hospitals today, one to Froedtert Hospital by Flight for Life helicopter.

The Washington Sheriff's Department said the driver lost control after falling asleep at the wheel around 4:30 a.m. on Highway 41 in the Town of Polk. Alcohol was not a factor, and no one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt, the department said. It did not release the ages and genders of the victims or their relationship to one another.

According to the Sheriff's Department, the SUV was in the southbound lane, just south of County Highway K, when the driver fell asleep and drove into the median. The driver tried to right the vehicle, but lost control and rolled over several times.

Two of five occupants were ejected from the vehicle; two others had their legs pinned beneath it. One of those was transported by helicopter to Froedtert, the others to St. Joseph West Bend and Aurora Medical Center in Hartford.

The crash remains under investigation, the department said.
