GERALDO RIVERA
OFFICIAL STATEMENT REGARDING EMBEDMENT CONTROVERSY
Posted Fri, Apr 4th 2003 7:18 PM EST

GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I'M GERALDO RIVERA, REPORTING TONIGHT FROM KUWAIT.

BEFORE WE GET STARTED, ALLOW ME A PERSONAL NOTE. LAST WEEKEND, AFTER MY REPORTS FROM IRAQ WITH THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE 101ST AIRBORNE, I WAS TOLD I VIOLATED ONE OF THE RULES SET UP BY THE PENTAGON FOR REPORTERS EMBEDDED WITH THE MILITARY.

MY NETWORK AND I DECIDED IT WOULD BE BEST TO VOLUNTARILY WITHDRAW TO KUWAIT TO REVIEW THE SITUATION. THE REVIEW SHOWED THAT I DID, INDEED, BREAK ONE OF THE RULES RELATED TO EMBEDMENT.

I AM SORRY THAT HAPPENED AND, I ASSURE YOU, IT WAS INADVERTENT. NOBODY WAS HURT BY WHAT I SAID...NO MISSION WAS COMPROMISED, BUT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE CAREFUL.

I HAVE SPENT THE LAST FEW DAYS REPORTING FROM KUWAIT AND REVIEWING THE RULES OF EMBEDMENT - RULES WHICH ARE IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE AND BRING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE A CLOSER VIEW OF WHAT OUR TROOPS FACE IN COMBAT.
