New consoles
November 15, 2006 | Posted by Kevin Gifford | LINK
My insider sources (i.e., the Adult Swim ads) tell me that there are two new video game systems coming out over the next few days.
I was thinking about getting a PlayStation 3, because it's all glossy and enormous and everyone knows that bigger consoles always mean better games. (I mean, look at my Sega CD, for example. Bigger than a tank and packed with not one, but three blast-processors.) That plan was quickly scuttled, however, when I went past the Best Buy and found a few dozen people already camping out in front of the store entrance. It seems that "my" Best Buy is one of the handful across the US doing a midnight PS3 sales event, so unless I was willing to take vacation all this week and look like an utter buffoon, there was no next-generation in the near future for me. Ah well.
My hopes then turned to Nintendo's Wii. Chris, thanks to his hot contacts, actually already has a Wii and a selection of games for it, including Zelda. He played about six hours into it, but decided to stop for now until he can locate some Wii component cables for his fancy-pants HD flatscreen TV. If I want my own Wii, though, it'll be back to the camping...although theoretically, the situation should be better since Nintendo isn't being so stingy with the consoles this holiday. I may do some hunting around over the weekend, I think.
To be honest, though, I'm not very well motivated to nab either system right this moment anyway. That's because I've got way too much to play on my PS2, DS, and so on -- FF12, the imported Phoenix Wright 2, you name it. Hopefully I'm not the only one who feels this way.
(Besides, I just blew a bunch of money on this hockey jersey I've always wanted, so I'm a little low on free cash right now. Yes, some things really are more important than video games.)

Looks like we've finally entered the holiday season. I was at the local Best Buy today and the shelves were nicely packed with loads of anime--a lot more than the rest of the year. This week we've got a number of long-awaited releases. The cover boy of our November issue, Guyver, finally returns to DVD this week with the release of the first volume of the new series. Then we've got Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, which a lot of people have been eagerly anticipating. If you're a fan of UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie, the first volume of the second series is out today. And last but not least is the two-disc special edition version of the Fullmetal Alchemist movie, a pretty packed set if I do say so myself. It's loaded with commentaries, making-ofs, etc. A really nice set if you're a Fullmetalhead like I am.

The day I've been waiting for since I was 10 years old is finally here. I get to watch Transformers: The Movie at home the way it was originally intended (and with the cuss word intact, woo-hoo!). It's not exactly anime, you might say, but it's close enough and if you like The Transformers there's a very good chance that you're at least sorta into anime. We say goodbye this week to two really excellent series, as well -- Kaleido Star: New Wings and This Ugly Yet Beautiful World.

- Kirameki Project Volume 1 (Media Blasters)
Transformers: The Movie 20th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition (Sony BMG)

Nite owls, TiVo users enjoy Voltron and .hack
November 06, 2006 | Posted by Chris Johnston | LINK
If you're a nite owl or an extremely early riser, you may want to flip the dial to Cartoon Network. They'll be showing .hack//ROOTS, the anime prequel to the recently released PlayStation 2 game .hack//G.U. starting this Friday night, November 10 at 5 a.m. ET/PT (though it will technically be 5 a.m. on Saturday, it's still "Friday night").
Not enough? Just announced today, Adult Swim will air the beloved '80s anime series Voltron. It will premier Monday, November 13 at the 5:30 a.m. rear-end of Adult Swim (so technically it will air on Tuesday mornings).
Those of us who aren't insomniacs will have to set our TiVos and VCRs.
