Master P: The Rapper Becomes a Raptor

(9/16/99, 4 p.m. PDT) - Master P, whose love of basketball has been reflected in everything from his videos and stage shows to the establishment of his own sports managing firm, and even a brief stint with the NBA earlier this year, will take to the court again this fall for a second shot as a pro player.
A statement issued through the rapper's No Limit organization earlier today announced that P, whose real name is Percy Miller, signed a contract with the Toronto Raptors earlier this week.
P made his first fast break towards getting involved in the business of basketball nearly a year ago, when he founded No Limit Sports Management and promptly signed 1997 first-round draft picks Ron Mercer and Derek Anderson to the firm (LAUNCH, 9/21/98).
But his ambitions to wear his own jersey for the NBA last season as a member of the Charlotte Hornets (LAUNCH, 1/29) were quickly dashed when he was waived by the team in early February (LAUNCH, 2/2).
According to today's statement, P averaged 24 points, six rebounds, and eight assists a game during the NBA summer league, which was enough to earn the rapper another chance in the league as a Raptor.
"Through hard work and the will to never give up, Miller's road to the NBA has been a two-year journey that has landed him in Toronto," the statement read.
Fans eager to find out if P has what it takes to master a pro career this time around won't have to wait too long to find out. Training camp for the Raptors is set to begin on Oct. 4.
