Lazio cultural festival awards Moroccan author
Morocco TIMES 9/25/2006 | 12:22 am
Italy's cultural festival “Lazio between Europe and the Mediterranean” has granted its special prize for peace and friendship between peoples to the Moroccan author, Tahar Ben Jelloun, and the former Egyptian Culture Minister Farouk Hosni, reported MAP news agency.

Taking place in Rome between Sept.21 and Oct.14, the festival, promoted by the region of Lazio, aims at promoting communication along the Mediterranean.

The festival is also expected to award the Moroccan writer Abdelkrim Khatibi.

The first edition of this cultural event, in which several Mediterranean writers, artists, thinkers and experts will participate, is organised by the Lazio region with the participation of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the patronage of President Giorgio Napolitano.

The Moroccan painters, Mohammed Bennani and Mahi Binbine, will present their works of art during the event.

Through this festival, the organisers intend to reinforce values of peace, dialogue and exchange between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

They also want to make Lazio a bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean.

According to the Italian news agency, ANSAmed, Lazio Culture counsellor Giulia Rodano said that misunderstanding might be catastrophic.

"In these past months, the war in Lebanon and the words of the Pope have increased the value of the initiative, which is restoring communication between the two shores," Rodano said.

For Rodano, investing in communication is not a waste of time but a duty. And any opportunity for understanding is important today.

The president of the organising committee, Predrag Matvejevic, said “it is high time for Italy to play a key role in the Mediterranean policy.”
