MATERIALS:

  • 1 skein Opal (Opal Elements was used for sock pictured)
  • Set of 5 Size 2 double pointed needles.

    GAUGE: 8 stitches per inch.

    LACE PATTERN STITCHES:
    ROUNDS 1 and 3: *K1, (Slip 1, K1, PSSO) 2 times. K1, (YO, K1) 4 times. K2tog 2 times, k1, 15 Stitch repeat from * to end of rnd. (Note: for larger calf, add knits and/or purls between each Repeat) 15 stitch section.
    ROUNDS 2, 4, 5 and 6: Knit

    RIBBING:
    Cast on 60 stitches. Divide onto four needles. Join without twisting and work in the round in K2, P2 ribbing for 1 - 2 inches. [or length desired]

    CALF:
    Begin 6 Row lace pattern noted above and work till sock is approx 7 inches from cast on edge [or desired length]. I did 10 pattern repeats, ending with a knit row.

    HEEL FLAP:
    Combine 15 sts of needle #1 and needle #2 onto one needle for heel flap. (Stitches on needles 3 and 4 will not be worked for the heel flap) Work back and forth on the 30 heel sts on needle #1 as follows:

    Row 1: (right side) *SL1, K1* across.
    Row 2: SL1, P across.
    Row 3: SL1, K2, *sl1, K1 across. Rep from * to last two sts, K2.
    Row 4: SL1, P across.
    Rep these 4 rows 6 times for a total of 28 rows. Work one additional rep of Row 1- 3, ending with a right side row.

    TURN HEEL:

    Row 1: Purl to 2 sts beyond center (17 sts), P2TOG, P1, Turn.
    Row 2: SL first stitch, K5, K2TOG, K1. Turn.
    Row 3:> Slip 1st st, work to within 1 st of last turn, P2TOG, P1.Turn.
    Row 4: Slip 1st st, work to within 1 st of turn, K2TOG, K1. Turn.
    Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all Stitches are knit ending with a K row. There will be 18 Stitches remaining.

    GUSSET:
    With loose needle, Pick Up and K 15 sts along side of heel, using the slipped sts on edge. Combine the instep sts from the next 2 ndls onto one needle, K across, PU and K 15 sts down other side of heel. K to the middle of the sts on the last needle and slide the other half onto the first needle. This is now the center of the back of the heel. There will be 23 sts on needles #1 and on 3, and 30 sts on needle #2.

    BEGIN DECREASE:
    Knitting in the round again, Decrease in the following manner:
    Round 1: Knit
    Round 2: Knit to last three sts at the end of needle #1, K2tog, K1. Knit across needle #2. At beginning of needle #3, K1 SSK, knit balance of stitches. Repeat these 2 rounds until there are the original # of 60 sts.
    Continue knitting around on these stitches until 2" less than desired length of the sock. The finished length is from the back of the heel to end of the big toe.

    TOE:
    Round 1: Needle #1: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Needle #2: K1, SSK, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 Needle #3: K1, SSK, K to end of round.
    Round 2: Knit Repeat these 2 rounds until 16 stitches remain K the 4 sts remaining on Needle #1 to Needle #3. There will be 8 stitches on Needles #2 & #3.
    Now, holding the two needles parallel, weave together with kitchener stitch. [or favorite method of closure]
